my vet wanted to do ours at 8 weeks. well, the shelter had the requirment that it had to be done before we got her. it just happened to be our vet they were working with.

she ended up having a parasite (a common one) and they didnt get to do it until she was 4 months old. lol

but i trust my vet whole heartedly, so if they think its ok for it to be done that early, then i think its completely fine.

my other two dogs got them done later, one was after her first heat (we didnt know how old she was and one day we were like, oopps, she needs it done NOW) and the other was about 3 months old. both completely fine

What is the reason for doing it at such a young age? There are a few good reasons why you shouldn’t... But the main one is, the use of the anesthetic is so strong. Having such a little body makes it such that most vets will not do it until and just before their first heat. Which is about 5 to 6 months. You can always make the person who is buying/getting the dog to sign a paper, that will force them to have this done at the age of 5/6 months...

Shelters will sometimes spay and neuter animals in order for the animal to be more attractive for adoption(one less thing a new potential owner would have to do and if the shelter does it they will know 100% the animal is spayed/neutered).

Most veterinarians will wait 6 months before doing it though, I would assume it's the personal position of the doctor. I believe they like the animals to be 6 months because many vets aren't comfortable or familiar with anesthetizing such a small animal.

You are a vet assistant and you think there is a problem with anesthesia for the pets. Its by six months of age. The earlier the better. The biggest fear in someones personal pet is the diseases that a pet can catch at such a young age. Without a full series of shots they could catch anything.

You'll probably get yelled at for calling it "desexing" because they are still just as much male or female after being neutered/spayed as humans who can't have kids.

But, no problems in my experience, I've had ALL of my dogs neutered/spayed and mostly at young ages. Cats, too, for the record.

Many humane societys do it so that by the time the pups are placed they are already fixed and there is no way the new owner could possibley breed them.
It goes really well most of the time. Once and awhile they will have one who has problems with the anestesia but most cases it is fine. As long as the vet doing it is comfortable with the procedure it is ok.

My vet will spay/neuter at 12 weeks or 5 pounds, whichever comes first. This is just b/c of the anesthetic, but she says that the earlier it is done, the better.

My puppy was spayed at 11 weeks of age. Heeled in one week with no problems. This is generally the age it's done with shelter dogs.

Ugh, I don't care what anyone says. That's horrible. The pups are far too young to go through an operation like that. I use a holistic vet, and he won't even spay/neuter until one year old. Do what you want, but man, that's too hard on their little bodies.
