I think it has to do with how it's made. I prefer homemade, because just the right amount of everything in there, and because of the freshness, the flavor pops more in your mouth than something that has been on the shelf a while.
But yeah, cold glass of milk, fruitcake, with some fresh peeled orange... mmmmm

I think people who make fun of fruit cake have never had good fruit cake. The kind from the store is usually dry and hard as a brick. My great aunt used to make a fruit cake that was WONDERFUL. Of course, she made it several months in advance and it was soaked in rum. Oh, I would love to have a hunk of that right now!

To answer your stated question, I think people make fun of it because its name sounds funny.
As for Fruit Cake as a food, it's just ok. It's not on my 'don't like' list but it's just that what ever sweet you put it next to, the other one gets picked first.

Bad memories.
Complex flavors, complex textures, sometimes stale.
As a kid, my favorite things were simple and sweet.
As an adult, my association with fruitcake is just Ye eh !
I don't have a memory of taste but still a memory of my reaction to the cake.
I should give it another try, but I don't need to start a new relationship now. I'm pretty comfortable with my regulars as they are still pretty high on the Yum factor.

Try freezing it first, then get the cold glass of milk - I swear it tastes even better frozen! YUM!

I don't make fun of fruit cake, but I suppose I could sympathize with those who do. I just strongly dislike it.

good fruit cake is GRAND. Bad fruit cake on the other hand is horrible. I've had both.

I love fruitcake myself..many years ago I made a white fruitcake, it was light and oh so yummy..if I can find the recipe I will post it here for anyone who would like it.

My mom loves it too.
I saw some in the store without citron. I thought I might try that kind.
I think that is the flavor in it I don't like.
