Will simply erasing my hard drive work? I'm willing to do that, if that's one way to do it.

I know what erase means, thank you. I got a new hard drive, and transfered all the data I want to save onto that. But as you know Windows XP does not work on two different systems, so that's why I want to deactivate it on the hard drive I'm not going to use.

Microsoft recommends FORMATTING the drive to eliminate the Windows XP operating system. In theory, just deactivating the XP O/S is still in violation since the BITS themselves are the licensed code. You need to install the new drive, transfer the drive contents to the new drive, then wipe the old drive clean with FORMAT to comply with the license.

What do you mean deactivate? What will you be using if you are not going to reinstall it? Well if you want to get rid of it totally then yes just reformat your hard drive. You can save your work and some programs to an external hard drive or to dvd if you have a dvd burner, or maybe even a flash drive.

1. Open the Licensing Terminal Services window.
2. In the console tree, right-click the license server that you want to deactivate, point to Advanced, and then click Deactivate Server.
3. After the Licensing Wizard starts, confirm that your name, your phone number (optional), and your e-mail address that are listed under Information Needed are correct, and then click Next. Your request to deactivate the license server is sent to Microsoft where it is processed.

Note Your e-mail address is required if you are using the Internet method.
4. Click Finish.

That seems pretty drastic.

What do you mean by "deactivating" XP? What are you trying to accomplish?

Yes, if you weant to lose everythign on your drive, go ahead and format it.
taht will take care of windows for you, but you'll have no OS or any files on your computer, and it will be quite useless.

Unless you have soemthing else to install.
