It is ironic both ways, and wrong.

Well. I see what you mean. I guess we are really putting why we believed in God.....

Most atheists were religious at one point before being driven away. Therefore, an atheists point of view contains logical reasons and firsthand knowledge of both sides.

Christians have no idea what being free from religion is like, and are completely ignorant in the ideology of non-Christians. The annoyance comes from Christians telling non-Christians how wrong they are with no logical basis for comparison.

Let's say you trip and fall, hurting your knee. A logical argument could simply have been that you misjudged the height of the curb. A perfectly logical reason, and easily acceptable by a rational person.

But for someone that has never walked across the street, let alone over the curb, might insist with every fiber of their being that it was leprechauns that put you onto your butt. It MUST have been, and YOU are a bad person for thinking otherwise!

While you know what REALLY happened, wouldn't hearing about leprechauns be a little annoying?

"but get offended when theists say why atheists disbeleive"

I don't know about the other way, but theists almost always get it wrong when making statements like that. They always give some ridiculous answer like "they're afraid to submit to God" or "they had a bad childhood and now they're taking out their frustrations on God" or "they really know he exists but they're too proud to submit to him" or "they're under Satan's power" or "they're being rebellious" -- none of those answers have an ounce of truth in them.

Edit: The answerer directly below me provided a great example of what I'm talking about. "they don't want to have to submit to his instruction to find Him." -- How many Christians honestly believe this?

Atheists usually state it in response to a question so they can hardly be criticised for expressing an opinion. I sometimes get the impression that Christians on this board are hanging on every atheist word just so they can find some trivial reason to have a dig at atheism.

I don't see anything 'ironic' about any of this.
I don't feel at all offended when a religious person tells me why I am atheist, why should I be at all bothered about what any religious person thinks? I have already established in my own mind that they are to be pittied rather than mocked, they need help to 'kick the habit'!
As for their belief in God, I don't even object to that, it's all these different and opposing 'religions that I object to! Believe in God if you really need a God to believe in, but why do you need a forum or leaders and teachers to do that?

Not really.

I have never put words into believers mouths as to why they believe, there are lots of different reasons, as there are for atheists non-belief. Generally I really don't know why people believe all those crazy things in the face of overwhelming lack of evidence for their existence, and overwhelming evidence against.
I do get offended if a xian claims I don't believe because I'm angry at god, or I think I can lead a sinful life and repent on my deathbed. Any explanations that invoke "god" clearly show you just don't get it...I don't believe in god, heaven, hell, satan...any of that gibberish.

Why are you afraid to spell GOD or God or god??? That is very superstitious of you. One might even say irrational...oh wait. You believe all that other nonsense in the bible, don't you?

Just as ironic as it is the other way around, when theists get offended.

I don't get offended, I only smash those who belittle my knowledge about the lack of a devine entity.

I know there is no god based on my study of history, philosophy, and theology.

Long answer....No one can accurately state why someone believes in something until they themselves have the capacity in which to believe. It's the "innocence" that the Bible talks about when it says that we must become as a little child. It requires faith. It's a key element that is missing in the heart of an Atheist. They can never understand why we believe because they don't want to humble themselves and become that child again. They are afraid of being perceived as "ignorant" or "unintelligent" because God requires the faith it takes to find Him through child-like innocence to find him. It defies human logic. What they fail to realize is that God is not limited by human logic or rules or ideas. It makes about as much sense as me saying I want to become a black belt in karate but I'm too proud to humble myself to obey the "master" and follow his instruction in order to achieve that goal. They want us to "prove" God and we walk around with the proof in our hearts and in our daily lives but they don't want to have to submit to his instruction to find Him.

Short answer....Atheists think they know it all when really they know nothing. They get offended when we call them on their disbelief because they believe they have come to that disbelief out of "intelligence" and "logic" whereas the believer lives and believes through faith. They see intelligence and logic as admirable qualities while placing no value at all in faith.
