Early in WWI, particularly with the Germans, there wasn't a great deal of uniformity of plane color. It was largely left up to the preference of the pilot.

There were several, including Black Flight, A famous fighter squadron of the RNAS whose planes had black markings and names: Black Prince, Black Death, Black Maria, Black Sheep and Black Roger. They shot down 87 enemies without loss.

In the movie they made the decision to have the German planes all red and black for clarity in the dog fight scenes.

there were black plane(s). Most, however, were not red and the tri-wing did not come out when the movie shows it did.

Ahem, point number two: based on the "phraseology" I don't think you're military. Flyboys is a term of endearment which is only endearing when used by other flyboys or the grunts, squids, and jarheads out there (all terms which non-military should not use as a general custom). If you're not in the military, you call us "Airmen"

That movie is so historically inaccurate that it can only be viewed as entertainment, nothing more.
