For. When everyone's son or daughter is at risk of being put in danger, it makes us pay attention to the war and focus on what is wrong. When Vietnam was going on, no one ever said "Turn off the TV, I am so tired of hearing about that war!"
I served in the military for 10 years. I had a college degree and came from an upper class family. Few of my peers before I joined, while I was in, or after I left were from the same demographic as I was.
Until we admit that an all volunteer military grossly pulls from specific demographics, we will always be separated into "us" and "them".
Good question.

For! Everyone should do at least 2 years after high school. To include females. Too many people take all the benefits of being and American for granted. The typical native born American teenager right now is fat, spoiled, and stupid. Being in the military a few years would do a lot of good to help remedy this situation, and give these kids some perspective.
Also - if we had the draft, like it was in "day" - if you are enrolled full time into college you would be exempt. That might motivate some people to do better in school and get some education, thus improving America and it's future economy. Right now, immigrants are coming in and taking over the best jobs in America because they have the best education. (this is a fact)
There are so many reasons to implement the draft, including too many latent effects to list.

The question is moot. We already have a draft in the form of stop loss. If someone wants to leave the military after their commitment ends but they are prevented from doing so they are no longer volunteers. I do think that stop loss is necessary, but the politicians need to stop sugar coating it and call it what it is. It's a draft, and a draft of the most qualified people that require the least amount of training.

I volunteered during the Viet Nam war. The army gave me an education in microwave radio repair with additional training in troposcatter. When they began to launch communication satellites, there were no other people on Earth more qualified for the job then those of us with the military training I received. I've had a wonderful career in satellite communications for the last 30 years. I've worked for Western Union, RCA, GE, American Tower Corp, Verestar, and now I do contract work for Sirius Satellite Radio. Would I do it all again including the 20 months I spent in Viet Nam? YES! in a heartbeat! I think everyone should participate in the military experience. Women and Men.

The draft is a scary thing, but what are you going to do about it? If you dont want to be drafted than get inlisted now before you are drafted. Right now you can pick what branch, and the jobs you might want. If you wait until your drafted you go where they tell you. and thats when your put onto the front lines. I believe we need to do whats nessessary. Dont be selfish. fight for you land, your home, you young kids. I will. Men need to become men!! not scared helpless little girls.

Except on this forum and others like it, there's no debate. The armed forces don't want one, the administration doesn't want one, Congressional leaders don't want one, and it isn't happening.
I personally think the volunteer military should be expanded to roughly double the number of infantry, and reorganized as a Department of War. This should take about ten years. Then we could have a separate Department of Defense with universal conscription and training in case of some future major conflict of world war proportions.

This is another one of those catch 22 type of
issues where the Gov. would catch hell if they
did but if we were attacked we would most likley be severly out numbered and under funded
so to awnser your question im hesitantly for the draft but not for the war in iraq but just for our own good

draft no but it should be mandatory for everyone in the USA to do two years in public service, like the army, marines, air force, navy, coast guard, police, fire rescue or one to that extent but the first two years any deployments would be volunteer based.
