Not a hard test, and, when I joined, no calculators were allowed. You can ask a recruiter though. Additional advice, go to college, finish a BA/BS and enter the armed forces as an officer. You will enjoy the experience much more.

I spent my career in the Air Force so I can tell you about it....

The Armed Servcies Vocational Aptitude Battary is a series of tests that test you in different areas, general, mechanical, electronics, mathmatics, etc. to see what type of job you would best be suited for. Some areas can be harder than others. I ALWAYS had trouble testing in the mechanical area.

There are study guides to prepare you for the ASVAB, and practice guides as well. You can go to your library and get one, or run a query in google under ASVAB and several websites will come up. www.military.com is a good one.

Unless things have changed you can't use a calculator.

Even if your scores do not qualify you to enlist in the Air Force, you can wait 30 days and re-test. The other Service recruiters will probably bug you, but keep trying for the Air Force.

When I went in, I was not happy with my ASVAB scores so I chose to take the ASVAB again in case I ever wanted to cross-train into a different type of job. Fortunately for me, the Air Force gave me a wonderful job and I didn't have to do that though.

Good Luck to you.

I retired from the Air Force 7 weeks ago.

The ASVAB was not particularly hard. You can't use a calculator. Attention to detail is key on the ASVAB, as it will be in your military career.

I suggest that you go to your library or bookstore and get one of the more recent guides to the ASVAB. They have mock tests in there, so you can get an idea where you stand.

Good luck in your future career!

I took it in high school and made high scores in all areas except the mechanical and electrical. The general knowledge and math and vocabulary parts weren't that hard (but I had a 3.9 gpa and 1250 SAT score) I don't remember if you can use a calculator, but www.military.com has a practice asvab...check it out.

It wasn't hard. It reminded me of one of those test that you take at the end of the year at school. There are like 3 areas you can come in under if I remember correctly. I think they are something like admin, general, and mechanical.
Now when it came to all the stuff about mechanical and electricity and all that stuff...yeah it was hard. I failed miserably at those parts, but it didn't matter. They just didn't give me a job working on planes or anything like that.(not that I wanted one)
Oh yeah and the other recruiters will bug you if they get the chance. Steer clear of them!
I did well on the reading and writing and math and science and all that so they offered me jobs on the admin and general areas.

The ASVAB is kinda tough. I do not think that you can use a calculator though. I know that there are books out there, that will aid you in getting ready for it. Cheers

No its not hard, and no you can't use a calculator. ASVAB is common sence questions. Try to relax as much as you can while you take it and go with your instincts.

DO NOT SECOND GUESS YOUR ANSWERS!

no calculator. It's just basic. SAT questions are harder than the ASVAB. Just remember your classes in high school.

It is fairly easy. Anyone with common sense should do fine. If you don't know the answer just guess, do not leave an answer blank. No, you cannot use a calculator, but then again you really won't need one.

The ASVAB is not hard and it would be better if you talk
to a US Air Force Recruiter and they would help you with
that info.
