Depending on what show you are seeing, I think you will see a range of outfits.

Some people get quite dressed up to go to Carnegie Hall, tuxes and long dresses.

However, if you are going to see a family show, it will be a little less formal.

You can wear a dress or skirt, but I think you could also wear nice pants and a sweater with boots/shoes.

I would not wear jeans or sneakers, no matter what age!

There are usually no dress requirements for performances at Carnegie Hall unless it's a special event like a benefit and then they will tell you if you need to wear certain attire and that's only because there's usually a reception before or after the performance.

I've seen everything from jeans and sneakers to tuxes and evening gowns there.

Don't overdress. Stick to dark colors for evening will be fine. Bright colors may have you stand out in the crowd.
