I got a message when I tried to play a dvd that said I need a decoder to play dvd'd, can anyone suggest the best free download?

There is no best. It simply depends on the software you want to use to play DVDs. Window Media Player works just fine for most people.

If you are using Windows XP then I suggest you follow this Microsoft link & download the Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility.

It will tell you which decoders are installed as well as the abilty to choose the default decoder.

I have a gut feeling that some third party program you installed has bumped the resident decoder out of the picture. This utilty will help you fix that.

I like power dvd. This is what I have been using for the last 4 years.

DivX i believe...however, you may also need some some codecs in order to play the dvd...so..go to google, type in codecs for windows media play...WARNING:You have to know how to use DivX because it does not support the interactive menu..you have to play it on your own..
