Not looking for the home-made recipe, but what's an available brand. I've seen Carolann's (sp?), Merry's Irish Cream, etc. What tastes the closest to "real" Bailey's?

St Brendan's. We just had some, and many customers actually preferred it over Baileys, and it is HALF the price of Baileys. Carolann's is good as well. I think Baileys has a bitter finish, but The St. Brendans and the Carolanns has a sweeter finish to it.

Bailey's Irish Cream is expensive. What's the best tasting lower-cost brand?

Irish Cream Brands

Try some Tequila Rose, it looks and tastes like Strawberry Milk, but you have to keep it in the freezer so it's nice and cold when you drink it or it's just strawberry piss.

The Bailey's situation is simple - if you're craving Bailey's, nothing is going to compare. It's like ordering a hamburger when you want a steak - it's the same cow...but a different part of it. You want "top shelf" for basement price. They have them all at the liquor store and most of the lower levels taste like chalkdust in a milkshake. Go for the Bailey's. It's worth it.

As for those I've tried: Ryan's or Riley's (same product under two different names), produced by a company in Maine, USA.

Carolan's works for me. It goes well in coffee and tastes sweet.

Another choice is new to the USA called, "Marula". It's from South Africa, tastes like Baileys and is made from "Elephant Fruit". Yep, there's a tree that produces "Elephant Fruit", so named because elephants like it. This one is still VERY inexpensive and very good in coffee as a mixer, or very cold all by itself.

By the way, Marula makes a very pretty and unusual gift. It comes in a brown/tan bottle with gold labe and is wrapped with a bright golden yellow cord around the neck of the bottle.

Omara's isn't bad, and it's WAY cheaper! I love it in the winter, put some in a mug and fill with hot water, it's got hot chocolate beat!
