I have a 5 year old poopom and her breath is so bad even the cat, who is bigger and badder hides. I have tried every known product but nothing works. We love Brandy very much but a face to face is impossible. Can anyone HELP?

The best thing for doggie breath is making sure her teeth and gums are healthy by having a vet check every 6 months. There are products on the market that will aid in your brushing your dog's teeth, but if you don't feel confident enough to do that, the next best thing is to find a vet that cleans dogs' teeth.
Some home remedies include: feeding your dog only fresh dry dog food, no people food and no soft food. The best way to get to this point without starving the dog is to gradually wean the dog off of the soft foods and onto dry food. If her gums or teeth are too far gone for dry food only, then you will need to discuss with your vet the best plan of action to take for the sake of your dog's dental health. Giving your dog an occasional bone will also help. Make sure it is a safe bone, no chicken nor pork bones that will shatter and splinter! Make sure the bone is large enough that the dog won't swallow it whole either. There are some really good nyla bones and other products like it that are suppose to help with breath issues.
Bottom line is that if your dog has really bad breath, that speaks volumes about her general health. It really is a problem that needs to be addressed with your vet.

No Greenies, please! From what I understand, Greenies are made of a substance that is only minimally digested in the canine stomach. If a large chunk is swallowed, it will not get digested enough as it passes through the tract. I have heard of many instances where surgery is required to remove the piece from the intestines as it has caused a blockage. If the piece is sharp or jagged, the situation could be much worse than a blockage. (See Burt's story below).

If you want to feed your dog something for their teeth, my vet suggested Dentabones. Dentabones are softer and better digested in case they swallow large pieces.

Also, I try to brush my dog's teeth weekly, although the vet says to do it twice a day. She won't let me though. And, once a year, I take her in for a deep cleaning: they put her under and really scrape the plaque off even under the gum line.

(A) Brush her teeth (with doggie toothpaste--most of it comes in meaty flavors that don't smell good, but they have mint and dogs like it).

(B) They sell mint flavored bones at PetSmart. They're similar to Greenies, but mint flavored. I forget what they're called, but someone there should be able to point you in the right direction. They work wonders on dog breath.

(C) If neither of those things work, you should probably see your vet as particularly bad breath could mean there's something wrong with your dog.

Peridontal disease is very bad news. It sounds as if your dog is past the point of being able to be helped by a home remedy - get to the vet for a teeth cleaning please.

Make sure her food is very high quality and take her to the vet. it could be a problem in her intestinal tract.
