Western Europe is very multi cultural, we have been invaded so many times, and have been influenced bu so many cultures and religions. Both in the here and now and throught history that we now see all the hypocracies and strengths of them all.
I am in Britain and know of very few "religios" peopl. Most people I know are atheist, and anyone who goes to church is seen a bit "odd".
I think we just wised up to the fact that nobody could possibly have all the answers and there must be an element of MYTH within all.
Modern times and science have pretty much concluded the same things.

Because many of the religious fanatics left Europe to settle in the colonies. In the era of colonialism governments were growing more afraid of radical religions, because these religions may cause unrest and bring down the government. So they made them illegal and kicked the worshippers out, leaving the more moderate worshipers, who later found it easier to abandon their religions.
