i think there are different ways to celebrate it, but for pagans, they celebrated it on december 25th, the shortest day of the year. they celebrated it because of their god whos name meant "unconquered sun", this was the day that their god proved himself "unconquered".

had gambling and drinking, other traditions included giving gifts, hanging mistletoe and holly, the tree is a symbol for renewed life.
