I think it is money wasted. Kids try drugs, it's just a fact. If they have a problematic home life, they are even more likely to try drugs. Some will try and get hooked, some will try and never do them again, some people will escalate to harder drugs, others will not. I doubt that the advertising really makes any difference.
As for the abstinence programs, it is clear that they don't work and are in fact dangerous. By failing to give proper sex education you expose teens to unwanted pregnancy and increase the chance of them getting an STD. All the evidence seems to suggest that abstinence only programs are a horrible idea dreamed up by out of touch Christian right wing extremists. These ideas cause more problems than they solve.

Waste of money. It was just in the news most people have had sex BEFORE marriage and the study went back to the 1930's etc. so it's nothing new. Sex is a natural human need and young people are humans and have and will always have sex. The money could be better spent providing more birth control info and supplies. The governments so called war on drugs and war on young peoples sexuality are huge and expensive failures.

I agree that we can not control teenagers from having sex, but I also think that television, TV, and radio play such an important role in our kids life. Kids imitate what they see on TV, study after study have proven the impact of shows, ads, and other things related to teens. I think we as parents need to not be so damn sacred to talk to our kids about sex, we need to ask them what they know about sex, and make sure that they are educated on everything from condoms, to disease, to pregnancy. Make them feel comfortable and let them know that they can talk to you or any adult about what they are feeling, or what they have already done or are going to do. The same applies with doing drugs, TV has such an impact as well as billboards, radio and other things as well. Parents need to be open and honest with there kids as well about the affects of doing drugs. If half of the grown adults ages 30-40 can not control there sexual urges and be responsible adults about it, then HOW IN THE HELL DO WE AS PARENTS EXPECT OUR KIDS TO BE ADULT ABOUT IT AND CONTROL THERES.

Obviously not. Kids mimic their parents, and when parents are divorced, chasing lovers, living with boyfriends and girlfriends, dating, have men/women sleep in their house out of wedlock, making babies with 2-3 other partners, and single moms are "getting back into dating" while their babies are nursing, you have another generation in pain (drugs) and lost (sex). If their parents can't get it together, who can expect teenagers to behave better?

I think it is a mix: Most kids are going to do whatever they want
Others are going to listen and not really get into it...until they are ready.
And a handful are going to really so NO...
It's works but not on the many that they want to stop.
