The question is about toast that is already toasted and buttered and put on a plate. If the toast falls off the plate, it seems that it almost always lands butter side down, thus making a bigger mess. Some people have tried to figure out if there is a good explanation for why the worse situation (butter down) happens more often then the better situation (butter up).

Buttered toast always lands butter side down. It's the law!

If you really want to test the laws of nature, try this:
butter the toast then tie it to the back of your cat.
Drop the cat and watch it hover spinning above ground while nature tries to figure out whether the cat should land on it's feet or if the toast should land butter side down!

If you'd like the authoritative (and amusing) answer on whether or not toast always falls butter side down, check out this segment from the MythBusters! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UO1tHbE7uwQ

If you don't have the time to watch it, they came up with a 50/50 chance, buttered or unbuttered. Sorry to spoil the ending if you were going to watch it! LOL!! There is, in Adam's words, "no statistical predilection to butter-side-down."

If you want to ENSURE that your buttered toast, should it fall, land butter-side-up, it appears from empirical evidence that it will be more likely to do so if you butter it vigorously, making a dished-out, buttered top, particularly if said toast falls from a 2-story building....

It only applies when you accidently drop your buttered toast on the floor.
People say it usually lands butter side down...
However, if it landed butter side up, would people still eat it?
I wouldn't.
Maybe in the olden days during The Great Depression since people were poor.

You should go to the bakery and ask the experts on making toast.

You're obviously not ready for toast. Might I suggest saltine crackers and a can of cheez whiz?

The buttered side is heavier, so gravity caused it to fall heavy side down!
