Jesus said for any one that shall harm a child to tie a brick around their necks and throw them in the ocean.
When God said spare the rod and spoil the child he was talking about adults.
That's the problem now days is we excuse people for being ignorant as if its a mental defect but if we started doing as the bible says humans would get smart faster than a speeding bullet.

I am a christian, and in NO way beat my children - I have 4.
There is a big difference in beating them and disciplining them. The Bible tells us that we are to discipline, lead and train our children.
The Bible also tell us to bring our children up in love. To be patient, kind, and gentle. So ,I think you have been misled , at least according to the Christians I know. None of them use beatings to discipline their children, in fact are more loving, and in tune with their children's lives then most.
On the other note - I totally agree that the sin of adultery has been ignored way too often, but we can be spiritually dead, and not physically dead. Lust, is another BIG scripture that people ignore, and shrug off as not important.
As with anything in life, since people are of sinful nature, we have a tendency to ignore things that we just don't want to follow or change in our lives.

In respect to the bible in telling people to beat their kids:
The bible says no such thing. You gave no verse, because no verse exists.
The Mosaic penalties for violating the commandments are no longer binding, but violating the moral laws have consequences no matter what your religion or non-religion is. The Levitical laws give substance to the seriousness of violating moral laws in the here and now. You cannot be spiritually alive and commit aduiltery at the same time. You are dead.
Our civilization is in danger due to the disregard for moral laws that support the family.

Why do humans pick and choose what traffic laws they obey to their benefit? Why do people take advantage of certain tax laws and ignore others to their benefit? It is because people only what benefits them and not the whole thing. It is the Pick and Choose mentality.
Question is in Old Testament fashion, adultery is wrong. New Testament fulfilled the law and said we are under grace. However even the thoughts in the minds of lust is committing adultery. We have forgiveness through Jesus Christ but even he is rejectected under the pick and choose mentality mentioned above.

This is the question that man should ask.....and search for an answer. the truth is, we use the Bible when it is convenient for us. we do not want to think that we are bad people, just the others are bad. what the other guy is doing is wrong. this has been the way it has been for sometime. one example is how our present president lied about there being wmd, just to find out there are done. our last president lied about having sex. Clinton was almost impeached for a moral lie, whereas Bush.... no one seems to be asking about impeachment for a war that happened because of a lie.

Because women who commit adultery are usually hot and we would like a crack at them please.
Have you noticed that when the Pharisees, relying on the above, dragged the adulteress before Jesus, the adulterer was nowhere to be found? I mean he had committed an offence against another man's property, so surely he should have been punished as well?
Give me that ol' time religion....

what about when Jesus saved the prostitutes life when she should have been stoned to death, He said to her,"get up and sin no more." He changed the rules on sinning, we don't have to stone anyone anymore-even though sometimes we may want too. spanking a child is different from beating a child. a child must learn from his mistakes somehow. and i've seen those who use time out-sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, but spanking always works.

The "rod" specified for children is not necessarily for beating but for pointing things the right way. And how is it related to Leviticus 20:10?

Jesus said "Let the one without sin, throw the first stone!"
This reminds me of a funny story.
My Dad made us write the verses in the New Testament
about honoring your father and mother. But told us
not to write the verse that says, "Fathers, do not be
irritating your children!" My sister wrote it anyway. She got grounded!
Been there, done that!
