I am going to be getting my license for the first time in the next year. I really want one of the two cars listed, but I can't decided. I need something not so expensive, and something not so large.

I am a first time driver and I live where it rains, snows, sleets, and anything else you can think of. Which would be a better car to choose based on these situations.

Or, if you know a smaller, cheap, one you think would be better, let me know! Thanks so much :)

Those two vehicles are in two different classes. The caliber is a compact suv and the grand cherokee is a mid-size to full size suv. The Caliber will be cheaper priced, better on gas etc. but will be smaller inside. Recently, we looked at compact suvs and wagons and ended up with a mazda 6 wagon. It has been great it is fine in the snow, sleet etc. A wagon is going to be much safer than a compact suv and cheaper. Of the compact suv's we liked the ford escape the best but we didn't test the caliber as it wasn't out yet. Don't go with the honda crv or toyota rav4 a couple friends have been screwed by those cars recently.

Skip the Jeeps, they are not particularly well built or refined, and will depreciate quickly. Honda/Toyota/Subaru are the way to go. Toyota and Honda in particular are very reliable and hold their value. You will be fine with Front wheel drive, as you likely will not be allowed to drive all that often in the really serious weather where AWD or 4WD is needed. In particular a Scion Tc would be an excellent choice for the money.

The Caliber is cheaper AND better on gas. And being front-wheel drive, it'll be fine in the snow.
