Yes they're different New York City is a city, New York is a state, New York City is in New York, the state. They call them both New York because they changed the name from New Amsterdam and sometimes shorten it, dropping the 'City' for brevity...hence, New York, New York or NY, NY

I always say "There's more to New York than just New York City". The state itself is part of the 50 United States of America. The Capital being Albany located on the Hudson River about 4 hours North. Now New York City is divided into 5 counties, those being Manhattan (New York County), Queens (Queens County), Brooklyn (Kings County), The Bronx, and Staten Island (Richmond County). There is also Long Island which is Nassau and Suffolk Counties as well respectively. It really depends on the person. Some people I know think of Manhattan/New York County as NYC only and others think of all 5 counties as NYC. I see it as all 5 counties. In any event I am getting off topic, Yes, New York City and New York (State) are two different entities. Back in colonial days, NYC was referred as New Amsterdam from the Dutch Colonists landing there. Amsterdam, NY is now located nearby the Albany Region. If you'd like some really nice places outside of NYC to go to here's a few to name:

Niagra Falls

The Adirondack Mountain Park/Saratoga/Lake George Region

Thousand Islands Region (spent 14 years there and loved it), you're so close to Canada

Utica/Syracuse

Long Island - Montauk is incredible and lots of things to do on the Island

Old Forge

I really can go on and on but that gives you a small idea. If you have any further questions let me know or visit New York's Website. They have tourism links. And if you are thinking of going to Ground Zero, there's not much to see, just a hole in the ground. I know it sounds harsh saying that but everything is gone and they're getting ready for the Freedom Tower and due to construction, there's not much to see there anyway.

I hope this helped. Good Luck

I shudder to think what they are not teaching in schools and at home.

New York City (home to the Empire State Building, Broadway, Tiffany's, and Times Square) is a city within New York State. To confuse things more, NYC is subdivided into five boroughs; Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, The Bronx and Staten Island.

New York State has many different different cities, and the capital is Albany.

Its very simple, its like the city of chicago in the state of illinois. Its a little confusing cause they have the same name, but its a city called NY in the state of NY.
