My son is 6 years old, and he has been painting for almost 2 years now. Instead of his room looking like a typical room, he has canvases, painting materials, ect. all over the place. He is passionate about his hobby. He even asked Santa for a light box and new acrylic paints for Christmas. He is interested in selling some of his paintings, as he has sold some of them to people that come over to the house and see them, or come into the shop and see the ones that he has there (I work at a tattoo shop, and the owners let him hang his work there). Do you think there would be a market for his paintings on e-bay, or would that just be a waste of time and money? What are your thoughts?

Hey Broke,

This is very awesome that your son is interested in painting at such an early age. There are sites that you can post pictures of his art works, and sell them too.

Do some cute write-ups on him and the paintings, then post them at various sites. Keep track of each sale! Date, what it was, a picture of it, etc. That is his track record. Someone with his interest is bound to keep at it.

You won't know if there's a market for it unless you try. My daughter sells paintings on ebay, but she's an adult. The most difficult part of it all is to get people to look at the listing. The more you say in the description, the better. Use keywords that people would search for and your son will get more hits. The more hits he gets, the better his chances of selling a painting.

Start out with only 1 or 2 paintings just to see if there is a market for them. My daughter sold a lot of paintings in September and October with a Halloween theme. For some reason, this theme sells well in the fall.

Best of luck to your son.

IT DOES cost money to post on ebay, but its not too much and I think if you make sure to point out that the art was done by a SIX year old, people will bid on the paintings. I haven't seen his work, but if it is exceptional, people will be amazed at what a six year old could do and bid away on those paintings! GOOD LUCK!!
and merry Christmas!

The only way to really know is to try it and see, put up a few of his paintings and see how things go. You could also try setting him up a shop on http://www.etsy.com it's a really nice site kind of like eBay but only for handmade items like art and crafts. You might have better luck starting off on there because they get a good amount of traffic but it isn't so huge that his listings would easily get lost in the mix. Their listing fees are also much lower than eBay.

It doesnt cost anything to post on Ebay, so if its a waste of anything it could possibly be time. Nothing major will happen by selling your childs art on Ebay, but if it makes him happy, is there any reason not to do it?
