My daughter turned 4 in Sept. and has just learned how in the last few weeks. In the last week, she has actually learned how to double knot her shoes. They have to show an interest before they will learn. My sisters kids didn't learn until they were 6-7 and I feel part of that was because she only bought them velcro shoes to make it easier on herself. Since my daughter started walking, I have never bought her velcro shoes. My daughter also has a huge love of shoes. She must have 5 different pairs of tennis shoes alone. One of the kids at her preschool had a "cool" pair of velcro shoes and she wanted a pair. I told her I would buy her those kind of shoes when she learned to tie her shoes. If I bought them for her before she learned, what would be the need for her to learn. It only took her 1 week! I bought her the learn to tie book. It is a box with the shoestrings laced through the picture of the shoe. She must have practiced an hour a day! And when she could finally do it by herself......she didn't want those "baby" shoes anymore. Of course she decided she wanted a $50.00 pair of Nike's like her sister has.......Would have been cheaper to buy the $12 walmart shoes(LOL).

I learned when I was around 5-6. I remember it was around first grade. My daughter didn't learn to tie until she was almost 5. My husband learned to tie when he was like, 3 I think. He's a quick learner.

Some children can't grasp the concept. Maybe he's being shown the wrong way. My husband is left handed, so his ma had to show him how to tie by sitting in front of him. I'm right handed, and so is our daughter, but I tie with my left hand(for some odd reason! lol), and I had to show my daughter in front of her, so she could use her right hand. Whichever hand he uses, someone might have to adjust the way they're sitting when they show him.

Or you could always try the bunny ears. Don't worry about crossing and pulling at first. Just take the laces, make bunny ears, cross them and pull. That's one of the easiest ways for kids to learn.

We used to make games out of tying shoes with my daughter, and now that she's 6, everytime I try to help her, so yells at me, and turns around. She wants to do it, and I can hear her mumbling things about tying her shoes. The same things we used to say in the games. She's not very good at it, but she knows how to do it.

Try and find a what he likes, and what's easiest for him. Then make a game out of it.

Here's a couple sites about tying shoes. The first one is an illistration, and the second is about a program that helps kids to learn. It has some questions about learning as well. Hope these are of help to you!! Good luck, and don't worry, he'll get it soon enough. Then you'll have to smack him for tying everything together! lol Trust me, it happens, my 6 yo does it!!!

Anywhere from the age of 3 to 5. Children need to be taught visually and physically. Repeatation is a great help. Using music or a poem also helps. When it comes to learning children will go by example and try to implement the concept in their everyday life experiences. Have your child watch you tie your shoe, read books about tieing your shoes, help them do it by using a song or saying. You child will pick it up when they are ready...don't force them! I hope this helps!

I don't remember when I first learned...that's probably because I'm 25 now, hehehe, I do symphatize with you though. My daughter is almost 5 and she hasn't mastered that skill yet either. I know it's coming soon, cause she tries pretty hard most times. I do feel that every situation is diffrent. If your nephews parents don't let him try it will prolong the process. I don't even allow my daughter to wear shoe that don't tie (no velcro or zippers, etc.), unless there dress shoes of course.

My oldest daughter learned at about age 3 and a half... my neice who is 1 year older than my daughter taught my daughter shortly after she had mastered it herself... It was quite interesting to listen to the blind leading the blind so to speak...

My son didn't have any interest in learning and I quote "Mom that's what velcro is for"... My Mom took him for a visit the summer before he started school (4 and a half) when he returned he said "Nana taught me how to tie my shoes, she said kids who can't tie shoes can't go to school.."

My youngest learned at age 2 and a half.. She got a bear with tennis shoes as a gift after tying it's shoes 4-5 times a day for a week I taught her out of desperation to keep my sanity...

I have a six year old son and a two year old daughter. I began teaching my son at age three to tie his shoes and we worked and worked and before he entered kindergarten, he could tie his own shoes sufficiently. I will start the same process when my daughter turns three in February. It takes practice and you should try to help your nephew learn how to tie his shoes.

I remember I was about four, my son is five and still working on it. Your nephew might be on the older end but he's within a normal range of learning to tie his shoes.
