Have you actually run out of food for your dog and just fed it whatever you had lying around the kitchen?
Even in my brokest hour I scrounged through change jars and couch cushions to get enough money for dog food!
Do people really do this?

Thanks for passing judgment Elmo.
What makes you think that I eat out all the time or use expensive products?

I only asked because of answers I saw to another question. It shocked me.

Didn't mean to make you feel guilty JR...sorry :)
I feed my dogs snacks also, but their staple is dog food and I have never run out and not been able to buy more...

I really hope nobody took this the wrong way. I didn't mean to insult.
It's just that I didn't realize that people actually do that, that's all.
You can just chalk it up to my own ignorance I guess.

Oh, Mrs. Felton....no wonder you're single....throwing your arrogance around like that.
Take your money and go back to answering make-up and prom dress color questions.

I have seen people do this.
I buy 50lbs bags and have a cabinet in the basement I fill up. I always have canned around incase of a sick or injured animal and it usually ends up getting donated before it expires and I purchase more. I do often feed mine other things especially in the winter. I will say it wouldn't hurt any of my dogs to skip a meal. You make me feel guilty now thanks.
Added:
You don't make me feel as guilty as other. I buy a lot at a time and often get some donated to fosters. Right now I have my purchases of hard 50lb bags and Iams donated canned to the program still in the living room by the front door. The canned won't move I rarely use it but every tom dick and harry thinks look shes got food we need some. It was donated to the the fosters and I have puppies I used it to help wein them. I often give food away but I will do it when I no longer have fosters that need it. I have 4 adult fosters and 7 baby fosters I need what is donated too. I budget for my beasts but not everyone elses.

I have been low on money before and knew that would change but at the time being had no food for my 2 dogs, so what I did was look in my fridge and cubard and fed them warm ranch style beans and lunch meat so they could eat that night until the next day. Sometimes I would pay all my bills and would not even have enough money for ME to eat but we made do. The dogs didn't care, they ate and licked my face with love afterwards.

I will never allow myself to run out of money for my dogs and their kibble.
I would starve myself just to be able to continue to feed them Natural Balance. And I would never settle for say Iams or Pedigree or anything else I feel is below par just because it costs me a bit less.
But if there was some drastic natural disaster or something strange happening, I can easily feed my dogs chicken, turkey, rice, eggs, and everything else in the fridge that is suited for dogs.
I always have back-up kibble.

I don't think I ever ran out of food to a point where I had to look for money. Sometimes I pehaps run out of canned food and have to cook chicken instead (which they love), but I always make sure to have dry food stocked. I even purchase food ahead of time when I'm low. I just can't imagined my dogs going without food, I probably will go without food for them to eat if I was truely broke.

Well, I have run out of dog food once or twice, but I know how to prepare a balanced meal for them from real food. I actually feel real food is healthier, but I can't afford to feed 12 dogs like that on a regular basis.
They sure as heck don't mind getting hamburger, veggies & rice instead of their kibble. ;-)

THANK YOU, thank you, thank you.
My animals have always enjoyed that I would not let them be hungry, even in times I was.
Beyond any moral rationale,,, I "adopted" them into my life, on whatever level my life was settled into. I did that in a manner of a "contract" and am obligated to remain "responsible" for them.
Certainly there may be exceptions. IE: ANALOGY: I have pets and children. I support each to the best of my ability. When in times of "crisis" the Children would be first considered, and perhaps their waste food might be offered to the pet.
That said however, and I have to bet others will disagree. To consider having children with little ability to provide, is foolish. Adding to that "stone soup",,, any pet, is moreso.

I must have been born fortunate. I never had a dog I couldn't feed. There was a time once I borrowed food when there was a mix up in my paycheck does that count?

When my daughter was sick I couldn't get out to the store. I ran out of food (only for 1 day). I fed my dog leftover meat & veggies. He thought it was a treat!

Well i don't have a dog but If i did i would not have your trouble since I'm one of the richest people in the neighborhood. But if i did have your problem I would not even have a dog to begin with.I mean why did you get one if you can't afford it. Thats just letting the dog suffer.

sometimes but when we dont we ask our neighbors. when we do give them human food its only things like meat, cheese and eggs. but we always buy a big bag about 50lbs. or we ask our niehgbors if they have a couple of bucks to give so that we can get it.
