I love animals! I have seen really horrific videos of people killing and mistreating animals for no good reason. It has to stop!

Wow! Thanks Shane, I never knew that PETA was against animal ownership.

A local shelter is the best to join because you will actually be taking a part and helping. I volunteer for one one day a week. If you dont know what shelters are in your area, go to Petfinder.com and search shelters according to your city or zip code. If you see one that is right for you, contact them and tell them when you would like to volunteer. Trust me local shelters could use the help and you will get great experience with animals.

Depends on where you live. I'm very impressed with my local SPCA chapter. They help fund spays and neuters, help place unwanted and abused animals, run a shelter, find foster homes, help with emergency medical expenses by arranging discounts at clinics, post a news letter distributed at vets offices and public libraries, help the elderly or ill or injured to arrange temporary care for a pet so they don't have to give it up, etc.
And it's all volunteer work and funded through donations. How much do you want to be personally involved? They want you body, mind, and check book. I strongly reccommend you seek a local organization. You make a difference at home. Some of these horrific videos you see are designed to separate you from your money and next to nothing actually helps animals, just paid fund raisers' saleries. Yes animals need help a thousand miles away, but there is a starving litter of kittens or puppies needing wormer and defleaing and a warm shelter right around the corner from you. Their mom got hit by a car and died in the ditch while trying to scrounge food for them after she was dumped by an owner who thought she was a cute puppy at Christmas a year ago but who was too sorry to get her spayed and then got too bothered to deal with her when she went in season. The best thing you can do for animals is to help make your home town an example for every where else. If there's nothing there, start one. Become a local chapter of a well established national group so you can take advantage of their experience and not waste precious time and money.

There are a lot of groups out there. Be aware that some of the major groups like PETA, ASPCA, and HSUS are against animal ownership of any sort. They feel that owning a pet is a sort of slavery.

Often, local shelters are much more suitable for someone who would like to work to improve animal welfare.

As a member of Peta I can tell you that that's not true. In fact I have a cat and two bunnies!! The only thing that would not be condoned, as a pet owner, is abuse. You can go to petfinder.com to look into local organizations...also you could always get into fostering animals.

The ASPCE and the Animal Human Society. If you prefer the Human society then join the ones that DON'T Kill pets. They live a little outside of Oregon. I think.
