I drew my brother in law's name in the family Christmas drawing. He is a real jerk most of the time. I cannot think of a thing in the world to buy him.

Get something practical - it will pass the message on to him that you weren't thinking of something that will just wow him this Christmas, but it will come off as considerate to the rest of the family. Depending on what he has and what his interests are and what price range you're looking at, I'd say an emergency kit for the car with jumper cables and a mini compresser (you can get these for about $20), a hydraulic jack, a nice flashlight, a nice pair of gloves, etc. It will look good to the rest of the family, because they'll think you spent a lot of time considering what he could use - but as the recipient, he'll know you didn't. Those type of gifts always appear that way to everyone except the recipient.

When I am faced with having to purchase something for a person, and not knowing what to get, I always try to remember this one thing: there is a gift that I can give to somebody that is better than anything else in the entire world--The Bible. If you don't like your brother in law, the Bible is also a good gift for you to give him, because getting him this gift, or any other gift, actually is a gesture of love. If he isn't very nice, the chances are that he needs what only the Bible can direct him to- a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. (By the way if you do give him this gift, may I recommend either the King James or the New King James Version).

Don't expend too many brain cells on someone you don't like. Just purchase a gift card for him...Walmart should do the trick...I would't go for one of the better places for someone you don't care for. Years ago, when my aunt reunited with her high school sweetheart, whom the rest of the family despised at that time as he left her not long before the wedding was to take place way back then, when Christmas rolled around, they got him gift certificates for cheapo restaurants (like Big Boy or that sort of thing).

I have a brother in law i hate too- I always bought him something I thought he might like ....out of respect for my sister. Then he left her and the kids for alcohol and a younger woman so now I don't have that problem anymore.

As for a suggestion: a gift card for the gas station is practical you can put it in a box with some stuff from the dollar store (like tools, gloves, candy, stuff for the car) and wrap it real nice.

Get him a gift card - there has to be somewhere he likes to shop or go to eat. It's a gift and you don't have to put a lot of thought into buying something for someone you don't care anything about.

When in doubt, buy a gift card. Call his wife and ask where he likes to shop (The Home Depot, Target, Macy's, etc.) and give him that. That way, you don't run the risk of him getting the present and not liking it and throwing it away, re-gifting it, storing it in the basement to collect dust, etc., and wasting money on him.

I would buy your brother-in-law a gift in the same way you would buy a gift for someone you love. Sometimes, loving feelings are bred out of loving actions. Get him something he will really like.

I personally think that you should get him something really nice that you put a lot of thought into. It will irk him more as he probably knows that you don't like him.

Getting him a nice gift will be the sweetest revenge for when he pulls you name at a future date. He will have to try and top your gift or his ego will be hurt.

Why not a nice gift card for a restaurant that you like but that he does not? They are easy to buy, easy to wrap, and show that you cared to give him a gift of value.
