I know Mormons and strict Therevada Buddhism, but I have heard of others, which I can't recall. What are they? Or do some just discourage getting drunk?

All Religious empires discourage the drinking of alcohol to excess. Why? They don't want the competition.

Christianity disapproves of drinking alcohol not ban. Man has free choice to do whatever he pleases even though its detrimental to his/her health. Leviticus 10:9 is an instruction from God to stay away from wine and strong drink. That word stands true today and we are to in all ways honor God.

Not Jews. The Talmud says "There is no gladness without wine" but warns against excesses: "Do not become intoxicated and you will not sin." "One cup of wine is good for a woman, two are degrading, three make her act like an immoral woman, and four cause her to lose all self-respect and sense of shame."

An interesting legend regarding drink.

When Noah came to plant a vineyard, Satan appeared before him and asked, "What are you planting?"

"A vineyard," answered Noah.

"What is its nature?"

"Its fruits are sweet whether fresh or dry, and of them wine is made which gladdens the heart."

"Come, now, let us two form a partnership in this vineyard," suggested Satan, and Noah agreed.

Satan brought a sheep and slew it under the vine; then he brought in turn a lion, a pig, and a monkey, slew each of them and let their blood drip into the vineyard and drench the soil. He explained that before a man drinks wine he is simple like a sheep and quiet like a lamb in front of its shearers. When he has drunk in moderation, he is strong like a lion and declares there is none to equal him in the world. When he has drunk more than enough, he becomes like a pig wallowing in filth. When he is intoxicated he becomes like a monkey, dancing about, uttering obscenities before all, and ignorant of what he is doing.

If you abuse it, it's wrong, no matter what religion doctrine says. Paul actually encouraged Timothy to have a little wine to settle his stomach. When religion places rules and regulations above all else, that is when I question 'whats going on here?' When we live our lives in a mind frame of 'dont do this, dont do that', that's not freedom, it's confinement. Christianity discourages drunkenness, not having a drink.
