This is just me personally..........BUT i would go straight into the principals office and demand that she NOT TALK about her personal life or what sexual orientation she is in front of the kids...I would simply explain that it is against mine and my childs religous beliefs and she is a GYM teacher and is only to teach GYM> she isnt to be some gay rights activist or recruiter or information giver at the school. Im sure that is NOT what she is paid for. If the problem kept persisting and nothing was being done...i would take it to the school board meeting.

I would be worried, honestly. However, just because you are gay, doesnt mean that you fantasize about KIDS! Those are two different things. And, really, there is no different about a male hetro teacher and a gay female teacher. They like females. But NO WHERE does it say that a gay person likes kids. There are equally as many risks with a male molesting a child than a gay molesting a child. It is just that hetro men are less questioned. Ask the school if they have researched her background. I am sure, and I have to have faith that the school checked her out thoroughly. If not, it isnt too late now, to ensure that she doesnt have a record anywhere else. And, talk to your daughter about not this specifically, but remind her that NO ONE can touch you, look at you, ask you to touch them and reaffirm the rights and wrongs about behavior. Teaching your children is the best way to defend future issues!! Good Luck, and I do understand where you are coming from.

I had a gay female gym teacher when I was in high school. I will be very honest here, I wasn't comfortable at all, but, she was always professional and in NO way did she intentionally try make us uncomfortable. It was more likely just me knowing she was gay that caused me to feel that way.
I wouldn't worry much if I were you. There are more men that are a threat than that teacher would probably ever be.

The majority of female gym teachers are gay. I had a gay female gym coach in high school. She was openly gay and invited her life partner to every school function. She was very professional-actually she still works at the school and is still the coach to both field hockey and softball. There were no rumors of her staring at any girls or talking inapporiatently to anyone.
I would hope that any gay female gym teacher/coach would keep the same professional outlook as she did. I guess its the same as having a male gym teacher/coach. I'm more worried about male teachers than female gay teachers. They are going to check out the girls. My brother is a high school english teacher and says he and his coworkers need to remind themselves that these girls are really young. I think you should be more worried about that. Especially with what girls wear to school. Imagine being aguy with a 17 year old girl leaning over your desk, boobs popping out of her shirt.

Heterosexual or homosexual, adult sexuality has no place inside school. I don't think it is necessary for the teacher to mention that she likes other women or to discuss her love life. It's just not in line with the job.
Example: I had a female psychology professor who talked about her personal life in class and then would occasionally read bits out of the textbook. She was heterosexual... I resented the fact she was getting paid to teach us founding principles in psychology and instead she was just talking about her life.
Bottom line: A teacher's sexual orientation should not be a considered a problem around children. Being gay doesn't mean that she's unfit to teach. BUT it's not necessary to talk about her personal life in school- it's just not the place.
If you feel uncomfortable about her, you should think clearly why you feel that way. If it's anything other than your child's wellbeing, you should consider your own biases and getting more informed about gay/lesbian lifestyle.
By the way, there are no stupid questions. I don't think that you are being homophobic by asking such questions (if you are truly seeking answers). If less people assumed and more people asked questions [to learn], maybe there would be less homophobia as a consequence.

First off.....I want to make it clear that "gay" does not equal "pedophile" since you are worrying about a daughter and a female teacher.

Second.....the teacher isn't going to "turn the kids gay" like some people think. Being around homeosexuals doesn't turn you into one and trust me, the teacher isn't recruiting.

Next.....
Do the straight teachers talk about their spouses or girlfriends/boyfriends? What's the REAL difference? Teach your kids tolerance for those who are different than them.

We tell our kids that there are all different kinds of families out there. There are families with a mom and a dad, some with only one parent and some where there are parents of the same sex. LOVE is what makes a family.

No different than if the teacher/coach were heterosexual. What is up with society these days, people so preoccupied with what is happening in everyone else's bedrooms? People have been homosexual since the beginning of time, there are some primates which also practice homosexuality (see bonobo chimps). We need to get over the puritinistic attitudes that seems to be underlying most things. People are all different and whether someone wants to have sex with only one person at a time, multiple people at a time, homosexual sex or heterosexual sex, it is all good. Enjoy the body that you have, and if God did indeed create everything, then he created homosexuality, etc. Homosexuals are not child molesters, child molesters are sick people who's brains are not wired correctly. Homosexuals are no different than heterosexuals, except that on whom they are attracted to.

Her sexual preferences are of no consequence to how good of a coach/teacher she is. However, all teachers' personal lives should remain personal. (Knew of a young male teacher that like to tell grade schoolers frat party stories--inappropriate, of course.) If she wants to gush to her co-workers about her exciting love life that's one thing, but she should be focusing on teaching during class time.

If I had reliable information that she is sharing inappropriate information with the kids, then it looks like a confidential visit with the principal is in order. I would advise approaching it as a concerned parent and not go in like gangbusters. You'll more likely be heard and heeded.

If she openly shared this information with my child I would be concerned because this is not a sex ed class. However to just teach my child the sex prference of a teacher is the least of my concerns I just want to know that they are a good teacher and challenging my child.

Assuming that I was 100% sure the gym teacher was a lesbian based on verifiable proof, I would be a little bit uncomfortable with it but I wouldn't automatically assume that my daugher would be a "target" for her. It's tough in this day and age because being a homosexual doesn't mean you're a pedophile, but when you see the stories in the news about teachers getting sexually involved with young children it makes you worry. But hey, innocent until proven guilty, right? I'd just let it go and wouldn't give it much thought unless something came up that would indicate that the gym teacher was preying on young girls -- at that point I'd be concerned and would investigate further but I still wouldn't condemn the teacher without proof of wrongdoing.
