P.S. Spanish is also tricky when it comes to spelling; ie, tu and tú (your and you both sound the same).

The reason it is difficult is two-fold. 1. The English language is described as the hardest language to learn because of all the rules that don't always ring true; ie, "I before E, except after C, and even then, not always"... such as, "Sufficient".

2. Our education system is overloaded, so often students that need the extra attention are not getting it because the teachers have their hands full already.

Okay, three-fold: 3. Because some Americans are too lazy to push the Check Spelling button.

Spelling has become secondary in a lot of english speaking societies. I know that our school system in the 1980's began to stress idea that phonics was all that was important. In doing so they created a language that did not depend on correct spelling. Text messaging and computers haven't helped the situation as "u" "r" and other letters have begun to be acceptable forms of written words. I'm sure that there will be other changes as society continues to evolve.

Because English spelling is very difficult as it's not written the same way it's pronounced. Other languages are spelt out exactly as they are said so it's much easier, such as Spanish. Also, speaking for only the UK, spelling is not valued so much so often children are not taught it well at school so they never end up learning it. I think English is a very hard language to write properly though!

because some people just have trouble spelling. everyone does it, not just English speaking people. for example...you are making a grammar mistake. "Why do some native speakers of english do a lot of spelling mistakes?" it is "MAKE" a lot of spelling mistakes.

Because the US public school system is a joke and in total shambles. They spend all their time learning about Kwanza, MLK, and how not to hurt someone's feelings, and other touchy feelly crap instead of the basics: English, Math, History and Science. The PC movement has really hurt our schools. Also, we're lazy and don't feel like taking the time to form a proper sentence.

there is no connection between speaking well and writing well. if you actually look at the language, there are many variations on words. most of us understand that mistakes happen. besides, i think that proper grammar is much more important than proper spelling, don't you?
