depends on the school.

A proper karate dojo should teach you how to fight. Ask the style that they teach, if they can't tell you then chances are its a crappy dojo if not an outright Mcdojo.
It sounds sad but many many places don't teach you properly or at all.

If you are training to learn to fight then read this, it could save your life:

You also can get some excercise and conditioning while training but if you are training simply to get in shape, a more concentrated excercise plan and eating plan would be more effective. Train and learn technique in the dojo, do conditioning, push ups or whatever on your own time. My attitude is if you want to be a fat *** then be one but why should I lose class time that I can learn drill or spar so you can get your 20 minuites of excercise a week in?

Don't listen to any "mind-body" discipline crap, if you don't have discipline before you go in, you will not get it by benefit of doing martial arts. More likely if somoene is undisciplined and predisposed to hurt people you are giving them the tools to more effectively do it, or if they don't have discipline they will just quit anyway or not train and be a crappy fighter.

Self-improvement of any kind, and achievements of any kind will give you self-confidence. Whether it is learning martial arts, or learning to play the violin or paint.

Take karate because you want to learn to fight. There are side benefits, but you don't take up a martial art for the reason of the side benefits, they are like the "and 1" on a three point play.

try a few classes and find out for yourself if you dont like it you can always try another one.the physical and health benefits are obvious
as for some of the crap that the ma wannabe experts have posted they obviously dont have a clue they cant even tell the difference between karate and tkd.as for all these moves that have been taken out what a lot of hogwash.try it for yourself if you listen to all these self appointed ma wanna be experts you'll still be sitting at home watching tv in 10 years time.you'll never know if you dont have a go.
anyway thats my opinion but what would i know ive only been doing karate and ma for 37 years.

Better flexibility, better stamina, a good cardio workout, some upper body strength or overall body tone (muscle etc.) may be developed if they do things like jumping jacks, pushups, or crunches/situps, and leg raises for a warm up or cool down time.

you can also have several social relations with fellow students, maybe even find some more friends that share your interests.

and of course the self defense techniuques you'll learn.

The Benefits of Karate-Do

Karate-Do is the classical art of weaponless self-defense; it literally translates as " The method of the empty hands". Traditional Karate-Do uses mental focus and discipline to develop physical skills such as speed, strength, and agility. Training the mind and body together results in more productive benefits as opposed to monotonous exercise routines found in most fitness gyms.

Fitness and Overall Health: Karate-Do training improves flexibility, strength, coordination, and endurance of an individual. Karate-Do's punches, thrust, kicks, blocks, sweeps and throws tones the whole body in an explosive and dynamic workout.

Stress Reduction: In addition to the stress reducing benefits of any physical activity, Karate-Do also improves concentration and awareness of mental attitudes that can cause stress.

Self-Confidence: While all physical activities improves feelings of well-being, Traditional Karate-Do places special emphasis on building character, and focuses on increasing self-confidence, awareness, and perseverance through repetitive physical and mental exercises.

Self-Defense: Traditional Karate-Do is the best martial art for self-defense because it focuses on actual defense skills rather than sport oriented techniques that are found to be impractical and inefficient in actual combative situations.

Physical benefits include: Mental benefits include:

Cardiovascular exercise Discipline

Coordination Perseverance

Flexibility Humility

Practical self-defense techniques Responsibility

Karate became one of the worst fighting style because of demilitarization by America after Pearl Harbor.
Karate used to have some of the sickest moves effective for killing.
But all those moves were banned(now it's purely for self defense). Ninjitsu also banished after that event tool place.
Idiots say it's a mythical style that uses magics but it's not. It was one of the best assassination arts taught in Japan.
