Well, it is my understanding that people in the USA receive a very poor education, especially in Mathematics and English.
Even president Regan said it once. Besides, English is a very complex language concerning pronunciation. To pronounce a word you must know how to say it, because a word may have different pronunciations, and depending on how you say it, the meaning would be different.
So much that I have seen Anglos asking foreigners how to say something in English. Surprising ! But it is true

The way I see it, non-English speakers have to learn exactly how everything is spelled/said to fully understand the language. Native English speakers already know how to speak by the time they get to school, so they don't care so much about making sure it's spelled correctly. They don't really have much to prove.

They don't pay attention in English class, or they are just too lazy. There is also a stigma attached to being smart in the United States, so younger people don't want to appear nerdy. Additionally, some people think it's fun to spell things incorrectly. However, I think it's just that people are too lazy to reread their work, use spell check, or bother to figure out how to spell a word in the first place.

It may be attributed to two things:
1. poor attention to detail
2. the absence of spell checking.
