hi
if your talking about popcorn ceiling
cover the floor with a drop sheet
then you can used a scrapper
or
i used a spry bottle and wet the popcorn and used a hand scrapper to remove it
let dry then prime and paint

pcc is absolutely correct. They even sell a scraper, with a long hanlde, to ease the job. Any hardware store will know what you're talking about when you ask for it. Just make sure when you spray or mist the popcorn, give it plenty of time to soak it, this will make it easy to clean of the popcorn without gouging the sheetrock underneath.

If the ceiling has been sealed with flat oil base ceiling paint this process will take much longer and be much harder to remove.
