Trying to fill an emptiness with anything: booze, drugs, food, the computer, TV, sports, religion, etc.
People who go through withdrawal and programs to be addiction free, should also be taught how to fill the void left behind with positive addictions. Each individual must learn what they find positive. One answer does not fit all.
Moderation should also be taught, as anything can become an addiction if taken too far...the definition of "fan" is fanatic (another form of addiction), after all.

addiction is "needing something" Not being able to live with out it. My husband is addicted to pot and sometimes he denies it, but we just had a talk about it last night and we both know he's addicted because if he's in a bad mood, grumpy, angry, or tired he can't get out of it on his own, he NEEDs the pot to settle down. WE also know he's addicted because he can't go more then 12 hours with out it with out getting VERY agitated. He's not happy he has an addiction. It's not something anyone plans, but one you have one it's SO hard to get out of it. You body and mind Feel like they NEED it to survive and right now he is using pot to survive the trials in life and when he doesn't have pot he feels like he can't control himself. That's a true addiction in my opinion. If you or someone you care about have an addiction, know that you're not the only one and know that it's a long hard process to get over, be Strong and take care of your self.
