I have to make a costume for our Christmas play at our church (United). When I looked, I found Mary dressed both ways. Which should I do?

I have been asked to make this and I need help. Helpful suggestions only please! I have white and blue fabric...if I need something else, let me know.

This is all symbolic, I know. I don't want to show up at the Church with a historically accurate costume that no one of 2006 will understand.

What do most people see her as wearing. This isn't a religious philosophic question. Just a simple Church play looking for a Mary that everyone can identify.

Since she was a virgin at the time you are depicting, I would go with the white robe and blue headpiece.

White is a symbol of religious purity and light and should be reserved for Jesus. Blue expressed truth and constancy. Christ and the Virgin Mary wear the red tunic and the blue mantle, as signifying heavenly love and heavenly truth. You should go with Blue.

Mary probably did not wear blue at all - blue was reserved for royalty in those days (along with purple). She probably wore off-white (non-processed) cloth. Perhaps brown or tan.

If you want to be historically accurate then you will want a very simple hand made burkah like outfit made of cheap fabric.

I think you missed the bigger question here. "Virgin" Mary? You keep believing that. Stick your head deeper in the sand and all the questions will be answered.
