The same thing they both display the picture in 1920x1080 resolution, the different is on how the image display.
In TV the picture is displayed by scanning process from left to right top to bottom. In normal TV they use interlaced scanning process, for one picture need two scanning process first it scan the odd lines and than the even lines. In progressive for one picture only need one scanning process.

I'm not really sure but I think Sony already stop producing plasma TV, an the latest they have is 1080i.

Depends on what size the tv is and how much the actual prices are. I have a 1080p 52" sony xbr4 bravia lcd hdtv. If your looking for something around that size i highly suggest this tv. Consumer Reports puts it as the best tv followed by a pionner then some kind of samsung. 1080interlaced is currently what tv companies would brodcast. That or 720p. They have not started kicking out 1080p and it looks like itll be a year or two before it starts showing up. Bottom Line: If it is an LCD tv thats bigger than 46", you wanna go for 1080progressive (considering your dropping enough money in there and that it is worth keeping for at least 4 years and worthy of being repaired). If your going with something smaller; when the time comes to repair it it will be tough choice and you will most likely just need a new tv because 1080p is starting to pop up. Bottom Bottom Line: Go with 1080p

1080i is the highest transmitted signal currently being used by television stations. 1080p is being used by HD DVD's. It will be may years before 1080p is used for broadcast signals as the bandwidth more than doubles.

Also, just in case you do not know, the i stands for interlace and the "p" for progressive. Interlace is displaying all the odd lines first on the screen and then placing the even lines in between the odd. 1,3,5,7, the 2.4.6.8.. While progressive displays 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 in order. You will get a better resolution with "p" than "i".

1080 "i" -i meaning interlace
1080 "p"-p meaning progressive

Very hard to notice the difference, but progressive is best for fast moving things, such as sports, or gaming. . In theory, 720p and 1080i are equal. Less lines of resolution in the 720, but its progressive so it can move faster and clearer. Most programs in HD, arent broadcasting in true 1080i, yet even

1080p is the highest resolution available, so far (more to come)

while the letter p stands for progressive scan or non-interlaced.
The the letter i stands for interlaced or non-progressive scan.
