My husband and I were discussing salt and pepper shakers. I say the salt should be the shaker with the most holes. He says the pepper has more holes. What does everyone else think? Does the salt or the pepper shaker have the most holes in the top?

It appears this subject as with the subject of how to mount toilet paper will not have a definitive answer.

I put pepper in the shaker labeled P, and the salt in the shaker labeled S.

Actually S is working all alone now as I now use a pepper mill for pepper. Freshly milled gives pepper a subtly superior taste.

I would vote more holes for salt as salt is not as carefully measured with each shake as is pepper. More people would like to more carefully control the amount of pepper they place on their food. This assumes the holes are of equal measure.

It's your call....

the International Guild of Professional Butlers asserts that salt shakers generally have larger and fewer holes to accommodate the larger, heavier grains that flow faster than pepper, although they do admit there is no manufacturing standard.

One web site indicated there seem to be two distinct camps in this matter -- the "Flow" camp and the "Flavor" camp. The Flow camp preaches that pepper grains are larger than salt grains and hence need more holes to equalize the flow between the two condiments. Interestingly enough, I found this same argument reversed on several sites, which claimed that salt is coarser than pepper and thus goes in the shaker with more holes. Guess it depends on the types of salt and pepper you are using.

Some people think that since people tend to use more salt than pepper, the salt should go in the shaker with more holes. Of course, if you are one of many people on a salt-restricted diet, this solution may not make sense for you.

Your husband wins the bet, for once! According to the International Guild of Professional Butlers, you should put salt in the shaker with larger and fewer holes to accomodate the grains of salt, which are larger and heavier than pepper. But how many times have you had to remove the cap on a pepper shaker in a restaurant in order to season your soup without appearing like a dog shaking a rag? (Be a gracious winner, Bud. Take her out to dinner tonight).

The pepper has the most holes. Salt is usually the shaker with larger holes since pepper is more finely ground. You also want more holes to get an even spread when you shake the pepper.

Salt has the least holes while Pepper has the most.

The reason is salt is already small crystals and flow easily.
Pepper are larger chunks and need more holes to get something out without having to workout your arm.

However, for best flavor, I think pepper should be ground fresh from a peppermill, which leaves both shakers for salt.

Pepper is so hard to get out of that one little hole.
I think it should be the other way around also. Pepper shaker with more holes salt shaker less holes.

I think it is a personal preference. But, my salt and pepper shakers have a "S & P" on them...and the salt has the most holes.

Merry Christmas !!!

Pepper needs the most holes to come out of, salt does not.
