A good question. There are those in power that listen to the likes of daddy dee and sidekick. These people know nothing about cannabis but claim otherwise. Many people in this country grow their own now and the laws against it are really a waste of time. Cannabis could be legally available to adults over eighteen just the same as in Holland. The other main problem is stupid kids blaming cannabis for their crimes involving violence and theft. No names but I know people who smoke and have done all their lives. They work, have a mortgage, and don't go out causing trouble. The police only take action against cannabis users when they are forced to because they have realised it is futile to try and stop it. This country wastes millions of pounds every year trying to stop the use of cannabis. The money would be much better spent on flushing out the Heroin and Crack that is killing our kids on a daily basis. I have been all over the world and have seen it in every country I visited. Cannabis is here to stay and the sooner the authorities realise this then everyone can get together and work out how the situation can be resolved. Banning the use of cannabis does not work.

Cannibas is illegal due to the classification of the drug itself. It is classified by the U.S. gov't as a narcotic and therefore illegal if not prescribed by a doctor. The reason for this is in the time of prohibition the Cannibas plant itself was used fro many purposes other than smoking the flower. Ropes, paint, oil, food, paper(the Constitution), and other such materials were derived from the stalk and branches. This upset companies such as DuPont who lobbied the Gov't to ban such a substance that was taking away all the business of these companies that used synthetic materials to produce the same as a natural fiber could at a fraction of the cost. Check out the book The Emperor Wears no Clothes, its a great book that explains everything.

Many people say cannabis is harmless but I know for a fact it is not. My own brother started on cannabis and quickly progressed to harder drugs. His friend was the same and ended up being sectioned and spent a while on a psychiatric ward. It is said that cannabis is fine when taken infrequently but who ever does that? I myself have never taken it but have been associated with many who have, they all start on cannabis but need harder and harder drugs. As for alcohol and the government, why would they ever ban it? They make millions from it's tax every year. Some people shouldn't take cannabis just like some people should avoid alcohol. If you are an aggressive drunk then it should be avoided and if you have an addictive personality cannabis should be avoided. It is said we already live in a nanny state so we can't ban everything can we?

Due to racism and biggotry and greed.
Back in the day (early 20th century) it was very common among the Blues and Jazz community and Mexican immigrants. The Blues and Jazz community was predominately African American during the period of segregation and hatred. Mexican immigrants were cheap labor during the years of the Depression and were also hated by many in the south. Along came Harry J. Anslinger, Commissioner of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics, (who also had a vested interest in DuPont at the time but I'll discuss this later) eventually introducing the Marijuana Tax Act to Congress where it passed due to it saying marijuana caused "murder, insanity and death". The tax act made it financially "impossibly" for the normal person to make or sell marijuana.
At that point in time, there was a major discovery in the field of hemp (cannibis) studies. They figured out how to remove the fiber from the plant, making it very profitable to make textiles and paper from hemp. A major producer of materials for textiles and paper.... DuPont.
Granted, I'm not into smoking weed, but marijuana should never have been outlawed in the first place. I believe I even saw somewhere in the online news recently that marijuana is the #1 cash crop in the US.
Food for thought: Hemp seeds (the kind with negligible amounts of THC) have high levels of oil and are nutritious. A handful can easily stave off hunger for a person for a day. Excellent food for shipping as aid to impoverished nations.
Also, when growing hemp, if high THC marijuana is grown nearby, the low THC hemp and the high THC marijuana will intermingle and produce low THC hemp. So growing fields of hemp will make growing marijuana in the vicinity impossible.

To answer your question, it is illegal because of a compromise made in the early 1900s when the UK was trying to get opium/cocaine outlawed, some countries would only sign-up if cannabis was included in the list of banned substances.
As to your other points, many, many people suffer pyschologically damaging effects from using it, particularly the stronger modern varieties bred for THC content. It can induce anxiety, panic attacks, schizophrenia like symptoms and even trigger schizophrenia itself in susceptible people. People who might (or might not) have remained OK if they hadn't used it. It's bad for the lungs, but good for snack manufacturers...
Obviously many people use it with few or no problems too. This is why it's been downgraded to a Class C drug, with few penalties for personal use.

This is an old argument, cannabis makes people peaceful which is exactly WHY it was made illegal in the UK- during world war 1.
It is an excellent medicicne but its effects when used recreationally are well known. It causes psychosis, and the user becomes apathetic and sees "snags" in everything.
It also makes people very very boring.
Sorry but I think it should stay illegal. And I smoked it from the age of 15 until I was 36. Between the ages of 18 to 30, I smoked it every day. Both my sons smoke it now. I think we underestimate the effect of that stuff. Sorry, but this drug IS wrong, unless used as a medicine.

It's illegal because the government needs a reason to do something. If they legalize it, then they can't make the big busts to make them look good. Weed in my opinion, shouldn't be illegal. You would think alcohol out of the two should be illegal. I mean hell, how many times have you seen DUI's cause by alcohol. Alot, right??? How many times for weed??? Not very many, because your too lazy to go anywhere. Alcohol has numerous side effects, plus it alters alot of people's moods. The only side effects I can really see in weed is happy, hungry, and sleepy!!!

What a great array of answers you have!
My personal experience is that, used in moderation, it is beneficial In easing my aches and pains, and relief from stress. I have never been temped or felt the need for harder drugs.
Also, whenever I holiday abroad - and therefore have no access to cannabis - there are no cravings or withdrawals like other drugs.
However, I did break my leg trying to cross a motorway to get to the service-station when I had the munchies for Mars Bars!

People do get violent on it. Very violent in fact. Some people cannot tolerate the effects it has on them, it makes a lot of people paranoid and thus aggressive when they no longer can make any sense of whats going on around them. I think you should talk to FRANK and see for yourself how it afffects different people. It doesn't get everyone stoned and happy or lethargic.....

Besides the obvious health risks, it's because some dumb people will smoke and drive, causing loads more deaths on the roads. Some might think it's ok to smoke like you'd smoke cigarettes so more accidents at work etc. Besides, if they legalised it, they'd slap a huge tax on it as it would be a massive earner for the government.
