Wouldn't it have behooved him to write down everything he wanted people to learn and follow, rather than leaving it to the secondhand retelling and interpretation of others?

All the gospels were written after the life of Jesus. Best sources suggest between 20 and 50 years after his death and resurrection. I would suppose that the main reason that Jesus didn't write a gospel was that no one would have read it. He lived in an oral culture and only governmental and academic institutions used written records with any regularity.

It was only with the prespective of time that the significance of the life of Jesus could be seen. At that point, those who knew him best wanted a "written record", so that the oral tradition would not turn his life into "myth".

Hi Phoenix, Jesus is the Word of God in person so you see that the Gospel is not just something but it is someone, the living Word, and so Jesus did not need to write as He was the Good News itself, the Disciples however being merely His followers had a need to leave a written record of Jesus the Word.

Jesus had his hands full performing miracles and trying to lead others to His Father. It was pre-ordained that those he chose to follow him (i.e. the disciples) to document his work. These were not secondhand retellings or interpretations because they were with Him; its a first hand account.

Very thought provoking question, though. If you think about it, if he had indeed documented his work in writing there would still be a secondhand retelling/ interpretation from Aramaic to our current language.

Christians believe the writing of the scriptures by men was inspired by God and therefore it's practically the same thing. Would it really make a difference today if Jesus has written the words or not? I don't think it would make much difference.

It's amusing how many different explanations people have for this one. It's seems as if they're making it up as the go along, rather than having a logical thought about it. It's like a small child trying to talk his way out of a spanking.

There was a Gospel, called Q, some scholars think this could have been Jesus's Gospel. The Synoptic Gospels follow it's structure.

However this is just a theory.

he had better things to do than sit around and write, he was spreading the word and the gospel in his every day life. Plus it's a whole lot cooler to have a book devinely inspired.

Plus i think it makes it seem more credible that dozens of men were inspired to write about the same things.

He was just a bit too busy healing the sick, converting water to wine, knocking over tables, materializing bread and fish, waking on water and and carrying a heavy cross.

Who would have time to write gospels with a work load like that?

But that's okay, he forgives you.

Beside not having the time for his ministry was only 3/12 yrs.

We were to beleive in him through faith and through the miracles.

Jesus was the Written WORD fulfilled. It is us who need the written WORD not Jesus.

People would put His WORD aon a pedestal and Worship the Written WORD instead of the Living GOD.

No, because the human race has to figure out the right things to do on our own. He set the rules with his word, and the writer of the gospel made it more clear for us, and gave us basically a rule book.
