"More than nine out of 10 Americans, men and women alike, have had premarital sex, according to a new study. The high rates extend even to women born in the 1940s, challenging perceptions that people were more chaste in the past....

The study, examining how sexual behavior before marriage has changed over time, was based on interviews conducted with more than 38,000 people — about 33,000 of them women — in 1982, 1988, 1995 and 2002 for the federal National Survey of Family Growth. According to Finer's analysis, 99 percent of the respondents had had sex by age 44, and 95 percent had done so before marriage."

Abstinence only sex ed is a colossal failure. And this 'promise ring' business is asinine. My hubby used to teach sex ed but refuses to do so now. He said the Bush sponsored abstinence only program wants sex ed taught without mentioning sex. It is psychotic.

I think it also has something to do with how our culture has changed. Just go to the mall, watch tv or view these idols of today's kids and what do you see? Sex. Sex sells, and no one seems to have a problem selling it to kids. I can't tell you how many times I've seen mothers tote their daughters around, and the little kid looks like a mini-prostitute. The message of today's world is clear, "Sex is ok for all" and then we go and say, "But just idolize it, don't act if you're not an adult."

I've known too many girls who had sex in highschool because they either thought they should or that if they didn't, they were a freak. I've held my ground and remained a virgin (heck, I can do this my whole life if need be). We are pressured now adays to sell ourselves for what we think is love at a young age. WE show off our bodies with no thought of what it can do to us. THe girls I know who never gave in to sex didn't follow the modern trends or care about models and movie stars and singers. They wore modest clothes and were not afraid to say no.

OUr society pushes sex and then we wonder why we have such a high pregnancy and under-age sex rate.

i have under no circumstances actual seen abstinence-basically sex ed positioned into practice, yet i will basically anticipate that that's what the call implies; training little ones to chorus from sex. "childrens have hormones. a large number of them. popping out of their ears almost. they are acceptable even at the same time as they sleep." So? i have were given basically as many hormones because the subsequent guy, and that i understand a thanks to save it in my pants. "childrens have an inclination to do the finished opposite of what adults ask of them." not in the experience that they are acceptable taught. at the same time as too many little ones smoke at beforehand a at the same time as, many nonetheless under no circumstances initiate smoking because they are attentive to the disadvantages that come from smoking. With the right attitude, couldn't instructors effectively instill abstinence-basically education? Doing some thing received't make certain the precedence like you would desire, yet letting it take position isn't some thing. If instructors favor to coach abstinence-basically, they favor to by some ability come across a fashion to artwork it into as we talk's "if it feels good, do it!" approach. confident, it feels good NOW, yet what are the lengthy time period ramifications of casual sex, if any?

It works for the three people left in the United States that still pay attention to it. Abstinence only sex-ed is based on wishful thinking, and above all else, POLITICS, which very often completely ignores reality and common sense. The people who support the current abstinence only sex-ed have their proverbial heads in the sand - they don't like the truth, so they ignore it. The rest of the world is ahead of them - maybe someday they will catch up with it.

Let's face it, in this day and age, you can't stop people having sex before marriage. What we should be concerning ourselves with, rather than worrying about totally pointless statistics like this, is educating the future generations to have SAFE sex, and protect themselves, and teach them the facts of life, sadly a lot of parents neglect this, and there are some seriously uneducated people out there.

It's not like they polled everyone in the US, I certainly wasn't polled. Most statistics are just crap.

I don't think it's smart to have abstinence only sex-ed because that is such closed minded education. If a group of people are told not to have sex, some of them are going to get curious and get an STD or an unwanted pregnancy. People need to be taught to protect themselves.

I read that article as well.

The numbers are even higher than I was saying before, but I'm not surprised. It only says what I've been saying for years.

If we really love our children we will protect them and not send them into the world with a bag of "fairy dust" and tell the to use it if someone tries to have sex with you.

Tell the kid about condoms for goodness sake!

Abstinence dose work, and it works better then any other system around. The problem is not with abstinence, but with people. We do not want to control ourselves. We would rather blame some one or some thing else.

no because sex ed teaches abstinence as a form of birth control and/or std prevention and the study wasn't about that.

Yes. It also proves that the American people have been taking that boat ride down da Nile a little too long. Time to wake up, ya think?!
