I'm sure some people will say "It's never okay" and some will say "Whenever you like". I've seen some children, sometimes *babies* with thier ears pierced and personally I think they're far too young. I once saw a little baby, not yet old enough to walk and she was wearing big heavy gold ones, not even little studs! What does everyone think about ear piercing?

13 years old...as a welcoming celebration to her "teen" years.

In my opinion she'll be old enough to decide if she wants them...and yes, only one in each ear until she's 18.

I think it's just another thing that's up to the parents. Like you said, everyone has their own opinion about it. It is ridiculous to hear about the heavy gold ones, but then again, it may be a normal thing to that family. Who knows?
I have a cousin with 4 girls, who all have their ears pierced. I think the oldest is around 10 now, youngest is 1. Some she had done when they were babies, I think with the first one she had waited. She finds it's easier to get it done as a baby, as they are used to you cleaning them and changing them, whereas when girls are older, sometimes those are things they don't want done. Someone else I know had a daughter who turned 5 and asked to get her ears pierced. It was her idea, so that was a birthday present for her.
I personally chose not to get my own daughter's done as a baby. My mom always thought it would be "cute", but I thought more of the responsibility and all the "what ifs". I figure I'll wait until she's old enough to ask about it, then decide how I feel about it.

I totally agree with you on the baby front. I hate to see a child sitting in it's pram with it's ears pierced. So not cute.

I personally believe once they are a teenager, first year at high school. If you think about it when they are at primary school they're still running around with their friends and their earring can get caught on something. This would be rather painful.

But I suppose at the end of the day it is up to the parents to decide when the right time is.

well the child has to be at least 3 months old before getting a piercing b/c they have to have had their first shots. After that do it whenever you want to. I will say though if you haven't done it by the time they are 6 months old it's best to wait b/c after that age they will not sit still and there is a chance that the piercings wont be even. As far as wearing hoops, there is a such thing as baby hoops. My daughter had a pair....she doesn't wear them now b/c she's 2 and I'm afraid that she may rip them out while playing but when she was younger, she did wear them and they were not heavy at all. And whoever said that the pain must be horrible must have never had their ears pierced. It's more of a sting and if you think that is painful how about when the baby has to have shots....the nurse literally stabs the thigh with that needle...now thats painful

I got mine done when i was 11 for passing my 11 plus (shows how old I am to have even done the 11 Plus!!).
I think that is about the right age, just before the start of "big" school.
Mind you, most schools round where I live don't allow the kids to wear earrings for school, so it might be better to wait till 16 maybe.
I agree with you that the sight of babies ( sometimes boys!!) in prams with pierced ears is slightly disturbing! I have had mine done a few times and none were without a bit of pain so what must it be like for a baby?

I can't believe the number of people on here who think it is ok at 4 or 6 months!! I can accept that in Puerto Rico and other countries it is a tradition but most parents are doing it for purely cosmetic reasons - do they put lipstick and mascara on the poor babies too??!!
Here in the UK it is egarded as a very Chavvy thing to do!

I guess to decide on an age would be nearly impossible form me, but it greatly depends on where you are raised, and what age you got your ears pierced. For example where I'm from it's expected for girls to have their ears pierced soon after they are born, it is tradition, and many times it is thought of as a way to distinguish a baby boy from a baby girl. Somehow having her ears pierced makes her more of a girl, and grandmothers relish in giving their granddaughters beautiful stud earrings and seeing them look precious.
And while all this might seem ridiculous or inappropriate it is part of my culture. Ultimately you are still the parent, and can choose which age you think is appropriate based on your family, your culture and your beliefs.

In Belgium it's a cultural thing. Many Belgian baby girls have their ears pierced the way Jewish baby boys get circumcised. My sister even bought some ear studs for my daughter who doesn't even have her ears pierced. She's 3. I think 10 is acceptable, hubby thinks more like 16.

I got mine when I was 12, my daughter did too. It was fun, sort of a rite of passage when we went to mall together, had lunch, etc.

I don't think there's a set age but I definitely wouldn't do it at birth or as a toddler. I have a nickel allergy, so my ears were always itching, swelling and getting infected, even with gold jewelry. My daughter is the same way so we both rarely wear earrings.

I think 8+ is good, when the girl is old enough to take care of them herself.

My mom got my ears pierced when I was 2, and I had two piercing in each ear done (the doctor missed up and put the first one too far back to we had to get another one to make it even). I think it really depends on the parent. I think its fine for babies as long as there studs, and not hoops, which is pretty dangerous. I have three holes in each ear now and a cartlige. But as for a set age, I think around 2 is a good time.

10 or 12

My Mum didn't let me get mine done until i was 16, and even though i hated her for it up until i was 16, i agree with it now!

It ment i could actually think about doing itand i had the choice and it actually gave me some responsibility, but at the same time my mum could monitor it, e.g cleaning and upkeep of piercing.

I personally don't like the look of young children with there ears pierced but, each to there own i suppose?
