Before I was aware chocolate was poisonous to dogs, I let my Shih-Tzu have a small amount. He has shown no adverse effects, and it has been weeks. He no longer gets it. Does the poisonous ingredient in chocolate eventually digest or leave their system?

Many dogs won't react to very small amounts of chocolate. Some dogs may vomit after ingesting large amounts of chocolate and others may become very, very sick do to toxic reactions from metabolism of the chocolate.

So, metabolites from chocolate are further digested in the liver, passed to the blood stream, and exit via vomit ( for instance ) or in the feces, or are converted to other metabolites that aren't toxic.

Chocolate contans a chemical called theorbromine. It takes 2 hours for humans to digest chocolate, for a dog it takes 18 hours.
, which requires a lot of work from the liver. The most dangerous type of chocolate is cocoa, than dark, and finally milk chocolate. Small dogs are at most risk. A small bar of chocolate could kill a chihuahua. Most dogs can safely eat chocolate, but it is fattening. So give in small amounts.

Your dog will be fine. If she has liver problems than be careful. If she has no liver problems she should be fine.

Good Luck! :-)

Ok... chocolate does not give your dog worms unless it has worms in it... but that's a different matter.

Anyway, it's probably gone and out by now. He should be fine, most of the time they throw it up if they eat too much. A little bit will not kill your dog, just don't feed it to him on a regular basis.

It takes anywhere from 14-20 hours to leave your dogs system.....it gets filtered out through the liver.

No long-term effects. Most dogs get diarrhea from chocolate, thus it quickly leaves their system.

I have had dogs all my life and chocolate is not poisonous as far as I know. I had one dogs eat an entire box of chocolate covered cherries- and yuck what a mess!!! Another dog pulled a plate of brownies off the counter and ate them all. They were fine. According to my vet it affects their heart and nervous system- I believe it is the caffeine and sugar that they worry about- so long as you don't give t to them on a regular basis, your dog will be fine.

that dog is fine, caffeine can cause an arrhythmia in dogs and cats that can result in death. It will be withing a very short time frame from consumptions to death. It is always best to not feed an animal foods that are not intended for them.

If it was just a small amount only one time, he will be fine. It will leave the body eventually.
