HELLO!
It sure is mean. Maybe they're acting up for a reason. They're looking for attention. They probably should go to parenting class and learn how to handle their children. Also I don't think a child should be severally spanked. Any type of spanking is child abuse. Especially when the parent spanks their child while they are mad.

Not that I believe your really 88 years old but let me say this, the reason we have kids carrying guns to school, or running amuck is we have little or no discipline in the home. I don't have a problem with spanking as long as it is done for serious infractions of house rules. I don't have a problem with grounding my kids or punishing them when they are bad. What I have a problem with is our government agencies sticking their noses in the business of hard working parents and telling them how to raise our kids and what we can and can't do that back in my days as a youth would be considered positive parenting. What we have done is send our children the message that they can do whatever they want without consequence and now we are paying for it with problems like Columbine, and other school incidents, teen pregnancy, drug abuse, teen drinking and more. So get off your high horse and stop trying to point the finger at parents for doing what they know is right.

I'm sure in your 88 years you've seen at least one child that had never been punished and always got what they wanted. They end up obnoxious, bratty people with some big problems dealing with others.
If you want your kids to end up well adjusted to the real, painful, mean world, you've got to show them that side of it now and then. If you don't, there are frequently very serious side effects.

i punish my kid for acting up because he's not supposed to act up in the first place and he KNOWS that. Its mean to punish a kid when they dont know what they did was wrong, but when you've got two three year olds throwing rice all over the living room and kitchen... they should expect a beat down. how else should you discipline? "talking" to your child? im far from being an authoritarian parent, but i don't see a problem with punishment, especially spakings.... it hurts, therefore it gets their attention quickly, it hurts, therefore they wont want it again and wont repeat their actions, annnnnd it hurts ..... so they cut it out without making a scene (think of those nanny shows on abc or whatever)

surely you realize that times and things have change since you were a kid. the reason?: just look around you dear, you see some of these kids now-a-days dont you? i mean come on, kids need to be punished otherwise explain to me please how else they are to learn a lesson and how else are they to realize that they are responsible for their actions.thats the big problem today-parents dont punish thier kids enough and their out running the streets getting into trouble thinking they can do whatever they want.gangs-drive by's-theft-assault,etc. yes those crimes have been done for many years but look at the ages of those doin it now. young people. who expect to have what they want because noone ever taught them a lesson for their actions.its quite ridiculuos.our society and land is goig to hell in a handbasket for sure and its all due to lazy parents and folks like you who think that punishing kids is wrong and abusive. give me a break!

If you were truly 88 yrs. old you would be asking "Why don't more parents spank their children instead of all of this time-out crap". Or something to that effect. We all know that it was common for persons of your generation to either beat their children or be beaten as a child.

I don't believe you're 88. If you are, how did you get through life not knowing that without enforced discipline, children will grow up to be irresponsible lawbreakers?

Quit making up stupid questions. A real 88 year old would not ask that question.
