ANY!!
Some may not bark till they are at the door while others may start a block away but that is with each individual dog not necessarily per breed.

Look for a breed that will fit into your lifestyle.
If you are active look at breeds that require lots of exercise. However if you and your family are move home body movie watchers do not get some of the more active breeds as they will become easily bored and without the amount of exercise they need they will get destructive.
Almost any dog will bark and warn you of strangers approaching your home. It takes them to be an adult before the become really protective of the home. Don't expect a puppy to be protective but about the time they reach a year old most dogs will bark at someone they do not know.
Look at the dogs grooming needs and be sure you can deal with the amount of hair they will shed. Many shed alot. Understand how easily they can be trained and how are they at testing the family.
I have dobermans and weimaraners both are great dogs but neither one will take direction from children very well. Dobermans are independant thinkers and you have to in charge or they will be and the problems just get bigger from there. They are great dogs in the right home.
Labs and Goldens are more easy going and much more willing to please the owner. They are easier to train and will take direction from children. Some dogs see kids and lesser than they are and will not listen to them.
Check with www.akc.org and read a few breed profiles and then talk to some breeders about what the dogs are like. Make sure you get something the whole family will love. As it will be a long time with your family.
Good luck.

Almost all dogs are protective of their territory as it is their nature. This will depend on the dog greatly as like humans all dogs have their own unique traits.
I have 3 very friendly dogs, because I have trained them to be so. I have also trained them to bark when someone is in the area that they don't know or when someone knocks on the door.
My recommendations are german shorthaired pointer, black lab, or a weimaraner. All 3 are very loving with our family and all of the kids in the neighborhood. But do not like people walking past our house, other dogs on the outside of our fence, or someone knocking on the door.
Their size alone seems to be enough to back people up when I open the door.
With a lab you are likely to have an overly friendly dog, with a weimaraner you will get a stubborn one which is also a breed known to be hyper - though I don't have that problem, with a german shorthaired pointer you will get the submissiveness of a lab but they also tend to be full of energy - again I don't have that problem. =P
Please let us know what you decide. Do all the research you can on each breed and make a wise decision that will fit YOUR lifestyle.
Happy Holidays!

I'd have to agree with the retriever family, labs and goldens especially. Not the most intelligent dogs, but by far some of the most loyal and protective larger dogs out there.
Our black lab follows us on walks through the woods, constantly ahead and making sure no deer come to "attack" us. He always barks when a car pulls in the driveway, and has never been anything close to aggressive towards us.
Retrievers have been selectively bred for hundreds of generations to make certain that they are even tempered and loyal pets.

Retrievers are wonderful. Your best bet, though is a mixed breed with some retriever in it. You avoid the problems of in-breeding and get the good qualities of another breed. Check out your local shelter or rescue group. You'll be saving a life, too. Plus, these dogs have experienced being without family and are incredibly grateful and loyal to you for providing them with a home and family.

We had a black lab for about 10 years now and he is an awesome dog. He will stay in the yard unsupervised, lets you know that he misses us while we are away but will also make alot of noise when he hears something out of the ordinary. Within the past two weeks we got another lab he is proving to be very trainable, very lovable with a loud bark.

Any lab/Retriever breed, or a well trained German Shepard. We've had German Shepards my whole life and they are great. They can be a hand full sometimes, so be sure to give it some education. They also tend to be more family oriented, and often take a bit longer to warm up to new people, which isn't always a bad thing, especially if you want it to be a guard dog. lol Good luck!

So you want a friendly, large watch dog but not guard dog....
Try these breed types, but remember that all dogs (regardless of breed) are different. I've seen a protective Lab and a pussycat of a Rottie.

When my children were young we had a Bernese Mountain Dog. 120 lbs of friendly animal, but no fear that strangers would bother the kids when he was out in the yard with them. The dog would bark when strangers approached the house but would stop once we were clearly aware of them.

GREAT DANE
They are big babies, & love kids so you will have the friendliest dog in the the world. BUT people will think twice before entering a yard with an unfamiliar dog that stands 30"+ at the shoulder! And have you ever heard the BARK? :)
