When I visit my girlfriend on Cape Cod, I've noticed a phenomenon of putting these big stars on the sides of homes. Recently I've come across some of these stars in antique shops in Maryland although typically Marylanders do not put these on their houses anymore. I suspect it was something done in the past. The stars are made of tin and they can be 2 to 3 ft in diameter and brightly painted.
