if the dog is over 3 days old. NOOO it's painful, and if he's going to be a pet, then absolutly not. imagine someone cutting off part of your spine just for cosmetic reasons. i know you're going to do the right thing, you sound like a responsible person. i can't tell you how painful it is for puppies that we docked tails on at 3 months were i work, to the point where we refuse to do any tail docks for years now, because it's just a nightmare. kinda like cropping ears. good luck to you and your new family member

Plan on hunting, showing or breeding? If not, no need.
I rescued a JRT/Beagle who'e tail was docked. What the heck was the point of that? He was tossed into a shelter at 8 months.
Have fun with your JRT, it's going to be a wild ride!

Neither docking tails or clipping ears are really necessary. It's only for looks. A dog is fine without either. Why people think they "have" to do it is beyond me. I think dogs look cuter natural.

no its and option not something that has to be done some people think they look better with tail other think they look better with their tails docked it just depends on what you want to do but if plan on gettin them done you have to do it when there between 1to 3 days old it only hurts them for a little bit then the pain goes away so dont think it is anything mean or bad because it isnt.

You can when its a puppy you could, but after it gets older and you haven't had it docked yet you can't. If you try to do it after its older then you're putting the dog at risk for bleeding out or it getting an infection.

Absolutely not. I have 2 great danes and I didn't crop their ears. They are pets, not show dogs.
