Believe it or not, 49 days (7 weeks) was considered the IDEAL day to get puppy for almost all of the 20th century.
The reason that 8 weeks has become the norm is because the puppy's can have their eyes examined @ 8 weeks. Most all good breeders started (for their own protection) requiring the eye exam before they would ship a puppy. Then the carriers (airlines) also started requiring a puppy to be at least 8 weeks.
So, not getting a puppy at 7 weeks has little to do with the dog, and a lot to do with requirements we place on ourselves.

Seven weeks is too young! Especially for a large dog, you want them to be as sociable and respectful as possible. Between the 7th and 10th weeks, the mother dog teaches her pups many things, including not to bite!

So, by taking a pup at 7 weeks, you are risking having a dog that will grow up with emotional and behavioral problems.

Of course, it may be fine, but would you want to chance it? If you care about the pup, don't take it home until at LEAST 8 weeks!

Seven weeks is too young. You need to wait until at least 8-9 weeks before getting the puppy.

Seven weeks is the youngest a puppy should ever leave his littermates. Weaning shouldn't be the trigger for placing the puppies, and the seller who thinks so is ill-informed.

Experts say puppies that are removed from the nest too early frequently are nervous, more prone to barking and biting and have a more difficult time with socialization and training. Puppies need to be left with Mom and siblings until at least 7 weeks of age - and preferably a little longer - for optimum social development.

Not necessarily. Puppies should be weaned at 6 weeks. But then again, a responsible breeder doesn't sell puppies before they older than 8 weeks but should target about 12 weeks.

Seven weeks is not too young to get a puppie!?! They have to be at least 6 weeks old before you sell or think about giving them away!?! I know this for the simple fact I've raised 26 pit bulls myself and would raise and sell them!?! It only depends after the six weeks that they are able to be given away that they should already be eating regular dog food with a little water in it or at least trying to eat it!?! So just think about getting the puppie if your really wanting one!?! Cause it does still call for a lot of responsibility.

Usually 8 weeks is the minimum age...and a lot of breeders wait until 12 weeks before allowing a puppy to be sold.

The puppy would probably be fine as far as being weaned and stuff at 7 weeks, but reputable breeders and vets suggest to wait until 8 weeks. Puppies who are separated at 8 weeks instead of 6 or 7 tend to be better socialized.

Almost but not quite! You want a young puppy to form an early bond and that's between 6 to 10 weeks. The earlier the better. When her dog mother weans her and you can provide a warm place for your puppy to live and start on the potty-breaking routine, go get your pup!

8 weeks is standard for all puppies. Get prepared for lots of whining the first night away from their mom! Get a heating pad (simulates the heat from the mother) and a clock that ticks (simulates a heart beat). Good luck! Go with the black lab, they're the best!
