my preference goes to the GSD, only because I currently own one and have never experienced a terrier. GSD's are intelligent, easily trainable dogs who are loving, yet protective to their family. I like to call mine my "velcro-dog" he follows me everywhere and he is great with my children. however, GSD's need training, and they need to be kept busy...a bored GSD is a very destructive GSD. found that one out the hard way when he was a pup...lol woke up one morning to my sofa in the middle of the living room! he was trying to play tug-o-war with the cushions, and they don't come off the sofa!

German Shepherds. I have 2 of them and they are the most loyal, and mellow dogs you'll ever come across. And if you ever need a dog for protection, then there the one's you'll want.

those are two way different dogs. my personal preference is german shepherds. it's shepherd by the way also. but you need to take into account what you want out of a dog, and what your experience is and research the breed first. good luck
