Four to five days is a little long for BKK. This is what I would do.
Day one- After checking in I would go to The Grand Palace. Then I would go to Wat Pho and see the reclining Buddah. Ignore all the touts who claim Wat Pho is closed. I would spend at least one night at a Transgender show
.
Day Two- Take a boat ride around the canals. There you will see all the traditional Thai houses on the riverside a real eye opener.
I would spend at least one night in a Bkk red light district even if you don't plan to score its still interesting. There are three Nana Plaza, Patpong, Soi Cowboy. Patpong is the most shocking.
Day Three- Take a day tour of Auyuttia the ancient Capital. These ruins are unlike the flamboyant temples in BKK. They are much more like Anchor Wat.
Spend at least two days on the beach in Pattaya.

I'm so jealous...if you want to stay away from the touristy stuff...then Phuket isn't what you want. Try looking at Krabi or Ao Nang. These are more secluded and the beaches are less congested. Great places for taking a ton of pictures! Be sure to invest in a digital camera with a large Media card before you go if you dont' already have one!!!! Definitely spend a few days in BKK just to take it all in. Go to the Grand Palace and take a river taxi down the Chao Phrao river. Ride in a tuk tuk and take video! It is full blown rainy season now, so it will rain (hard) at least one time during the day typically for 15-20 mins or so. Never rode the train to Phuket, but from what I've seen the trains are a bit modest. Don't think AMTRAK standards. Have fun man!!!

Depend what do you want?
If you like to shopping to find cheap stuff go to SIAM SQUARE area or MBK. Walking around there, you will find some stuffs that you may like.
If you like to know about the Thai tradition and culture go to the Grand palace which's I recommend to you. ( Don't miss it, I always go to visit Grand Palace every time I have been in Bkk )
Around Grand Palace, there are so many Wat ( Thai Temple ) to let you understand about Thai root. I recommend Wat Pro which is across Grand Palace and you can take a rest by using the service of Wat Pro's massage there too.
If you like night life, which's I am don't recommend go by yourself. You should bring some of you friends go along with you. Pat Pong night market is the area which's closed Silom Street.
Hope it 's little help for you and have fun with the trip

Hi, maybe you can look at www.tourismthailand.org for information that you want on Bangkok. This will give you the sights that are there.
Do work out what you want to do. I should be able to help you draft a trip itinerary if you can let me know what you are keen on when you are there, whether sight-seeing, eating or shopping, even staying. You can get me at thaitourinfo@yahoo.com. Just sharing info with you.
Enjoy.

It really depends on what you like to do.
If you want to shop, which you should because it is so cheap, then i recommend going to MBK, the Sunday Market, The Night Bazaar, Siam Square, and just walking around the city and going to the little stall everywhere. There are also alot of museums and stuff like taht you cna go to.

What budget? What interests you? Shopping, hiking, bike riding, history, culture, what? It is so hard to give suggestions when people ask vague questions. There are tons of things to do in กรุงเทพฯ as well as on the outskirts. If you gave a general idea of what you are looking to do, your answers would be a lot more concise.

There are several WATs (Buddhist Temples) and WAT Aruin was built centuries ago and is covered in thousands of pieces of pottery .
The floating market and trips on the west side canal are interesting too.
There are also night time dinner cruises on the river that are amazing and inexpensive.
Avoid the tuk-tuks , they get commissions to drag people to jewelry stores and such and waste your time .
