I keep seeing this question of "fault" when it comes to Down syndrome. I am the mom of a wonderful little boy with Down syndrome and I feel BLESSED. I don't think of it as a fault of anyone or anything. God gave me this beautiful child...he is bright, and happy (except when he is doing what all 2 year olds do and throws a tantrum) and I think he was a gift from God. I don't feel punished or persecuted and I don't intend on raising my son to think that he is somehow cursed because he is not. Yes, he will face challenges that other children may not, but we all face challenges. All I know is that he brings joy to everyone who meets him. He is loved and he loves in return. He laughs, squeals, talks, signs, plays, and lives like a happy child. So how can there be anything wrong with that.
Your perception of a person with Down syndrome is what needs to be altered. If you, and people like you, took time to understand Down syndrome and to be compassionate and understanding, then there wouldn't be a stigma attached to it. If there is fault to be found, it is in the ignorance of society.

I noticed that quite a few of the answers are responding to the sin part, but ignoring the benevolent god part. Doesn't seem very logical to me, either, that an all-loving father would still be punishing people for original sin. And, in response to anyone who will say, "You have to accept Jesus first" - I'm sure there are MANY mothers out there who had fully accepted Jesus before they had their Downs Syndrome children, so that doesn't really fly, unless they're saying that the fetus in utero needs to figure out how to accept Jesus as his/her personal savior.
Blessed Yule!

This is free will just as slippie suggested. Much can be learned and taught by the so-called handicap. No life is wasted.
It is only our judgmental nature that wants to see some lives as being better or more valuable than others.
All of creation is perfect just the way that God made it. Any other way of seeing it assumes an incompetent God who can't do much of anything right.
Kids with downs are a lot closer to God than many of the bigots spouting off about how religious they are on yahoo answers.
Love and blessings Don

we are not being punished. these things are a result of sin and yes JESUS came and died for us and our sins but that does not mean that sin vanished. it means that our sins are forgiven and we have a direct ticket to heaven!! you can see sin all around us but with the Lord we know we are saved from it. so despite all the bad things that happen we know that the Lord still loves us and wants us to come to him and know everything will be all right!! 1 Thess 5:3

they told me that it was a good thing for a baby to be born that way. good for who? certainly not the child. a previous answer says yes, we are still being punished for original sin. that contradicts the new testament and makes the crucifixion a waste of time.
christians know that their beliefs can't stand up to tough questioning, so they ignore the tough questions and move on. blind faith=walking around with blinders on. we prove religion to be impossible everyday on this site, but they choose to ignore it.

Jesus Son of Mary did not die, he was raised to heaven by God, and someone in his form was actually crucified. Makes sense according the bible, why would a holy man such as Jesus Son of Mary, say "O God, why have you forsaken me?!"
Please just think!
[003:055] And (remember) when Allâh said: "O 'Ãsâ (Jesus)! I will make you sleep and raise you to Myself and clear you [of the forged statement that 'Ãsâ (Jesus) is Allâh's son] of those who disbelieve, and I will make those who follow you (monotheists, who worship none but Allâh) superior to those who disbelieve [in the Oneness of Allâh, or disbelieve in some of His Messengers, e.g. Muhammad [sal-Allâhu 'alayhi wa sallam], 'Ãsâ (Jesus), Mûsâ (Moses), or in His Holy Books, e.g. the Taurât (Torah), the Injîl (Gospel), the Qur'ân] till the Day of Resurrection. Then you will return to Me and I will judge between you in the matters in which you used to dispute."

What on earth makes you conclude that folks with Downs Syndrome aren't perfect the way they are? Do you assess "perfection" by IQ? Sounds like a bigoted argument to me.

Death and disease is a consequence of sin. It falls under the curse and the curse will not be lifted until the Lord returns. The sin issue of not holding those accountable for their sins is one thing, removing the CONSEQUENCES of sin comes later. If a man murders another and the judge has mercy for whatever reason, and pardons him, it does not bring that person back to life. The consequence remains.
