As I responded to another Q,
First you have to know the cause of this smell, it could be a disease like diabetes or some oral diseases. If no disease exists, these are some useful tips:

- brush your tongue and use the floss regularily because accumilating food can cause bad smell

- chew fresh spearmint leaves (it also whitens teeth)

- chew a fresh barsley, it has chlorophyll that kills bacteria causing bad odour

- chew a dried clove

- rinse your mouth with water that contains chopped watercress

- make your diet rich with fibers

- Things like alcohol, onion, gralic can cause bad smell so try to avoid them. You can use garlic tablets to get the benifit of grarlic instead of eating it since it's good to dissolve fats and for cardiovascular diseases.

I would have him use a tongue scraper, floss twice a day, and have him use mouth wash! I hope he is using sugar free gum, cause sugary gums can make some bad breath worse! Also, at health food stores there is a tooth pick that you can buy that you chew on. It is tea tree oil on the tooth picks, that oil can eliminate bad breath odors! The sticks do not taste the bad! Good luck with your husbands bad breath issue!

Since it sounds like you already brush and floss regularly It could only be two culprits:
1. Your tongue
2. What ever is or isn't in your stomach

If you are not allergic to avocados, you may want to try eating 1/2 to a whole one each day. You'll notice right away that your breath stays fresher longer and the more you eat them, the less problem you'll have with your breath. I happened upon this little benefit of the avocado while eating them to control my blood pressure, so I did a little research. I've included a link you can go to, but just do a google search and you can find all the info you need. Good luck.

Bad breath can be caused by oral/gum disease or dysfunction of the internal organs. The best way to find out is to visit a dentist first, if it's not the cause then ask your family doctor's recommendation (hope it's not digestive or liver related problem.)

He needs to go to a dentist first...if they find no cause ( a cavity or something) then you should take him to the doctor. Some diseases of the stomach can lead to very bad bad breath. Especially if this has just recently come up & his brushing habits haven't changed. This could be something he needs to look at, not just the vanity of bad breath.

Transient bad breath is a very common temporary condition caused by such things as oral dryness, stress, hunger (ketosis), eating certain foods such as garlic and onions, smoking, or poor oral hygiene. "Morning breath" is a common example of transient bad breath. Transient bad breath gradually disappears on its own, with the aid of chewing gum or brushing one's teeth.

Chronic bad breath is a more serious and persistent condition affecting up to 25% of the population in varying degrees. It can negatively impact the individual's personal and business relationships, leading to poor self-esteem and increased stress. This condition is usually caused by persistent overpopulation of certain types of oral bacteria, primarily streptococcus mutans, and requires specialised treatment. Xerostomia (dry mouth syndrome) will increase bad breath problems.

Fetor hepaticus is a type of severely bad breath caused by chronic liver failure.

[edit] Treatment
Currently, chronic halitosis is not very well understood or even recognized as a treatable condition by most doctors and dentists, so effective treatment is difficult to find. There are a growing number of bad breath clinics responding to this endemic problem; unfortunately, most are simply outlets for one breath product or another. As with all general-purpose formulations, any one particular product may be effective for some, partly effective for a few, and not at all helpful for others. A very small number of clinics use a detailed assessment process including microbiology to determine the specific type or types of odour-causing bacteria. The specific bacteria are then controlled by individualised treatments. This procedure results in a very high success rate. Some who take a more holistic view of the body, including naturopaths and alternative nutritionists, believe that halitosis can be cured or greatly diminished by improving the overall health of the digestive tract, especially the small and large intestines. This process usually requires a change in eating style, lifestyle, and diet.
