Relaxing uses chemicals and is more likely to damage hair.

No. Relaxing is a chemical process where the molecules of the hair are rearanged to "relax" the natural curl not straighten the hair and is permanent.
Flat ironing is when you take a double plated instument(the flat iron) and apply heat to the hair to straighten or curl the hair and is temporary. Or you could get ghetto with it and iron your hair with a regular iron on an ironing board~lol~ But no joke I have had it done but it seems to be more popular with Latinas though.

flat ironing is just two flat plates used to heat your hair which causes it to come out straight and this only makes your hair temporarily straight, its not a forever thing unless you do it everyday or when ever you want your hair straight.
relaxing is way different from flat iron, relaxing is when you go to a salon to get your hair straightened permanently or until it grows out. they put several kinds of chemicals to help 'relax' the hair to get it straight. this only lasts at least a couple of months, or depending on how fast your hair grows.
both flat iron and relaxing damages the hair because you're constantly burning your hair with the flat iron and all the different chemicals in relaxing can dry your hair and also damage it.
hope that helped.

flat iron uses heat to straighten the hair like a pressing comb. but relaxing uses a chemical to permanenly straighten the hair. an iron will help keep it straight but when you wash it will return to curly.

When you take something that is wavy, curly, or overly curly and put it into a straight form, yes, the thermal iron is relaxing the curl temporarily. There's also a chemical relaxer which is a special type of lotion or creme that contains a strong alkaline (it can also contain perm salt), and this treatment relaxes the curl.

it is not the same.

when you flat ironing the hair you straigthens the hair without the use of chemical(s). Normally persons with curly hair uses a flat iron when they wait a straight hair style. This process uses heat to straighten the hair

Relaxing the hair uses chemicals. If your hair is coarse it softens the hair to allow you to straighten it.

It is just straightening your hair, because a hair straightener is also called a flat iron.

No. Ironing your hair actually causes damage and stress to your hair. It heats it up to make it sleek. Its like you asking "Is scalding-burning-your-skin-and-flesh hot water the same as relaxing your body in wamer then lukewarm water while your in a bubble-bath??"
