Labs are sweet dogs but they will grow very fast. They need lots of exercise and proper things to chew on. They train quickly with love and and positive feedback. Here are a few main points

1. Give them a "quiet place" This is where they can not be disturbed no matter how much you want to play with them. If you are going to crate or kennel train them it can be there, if not make it where their bed is. Use the term Kennel or Bed (one word) as the command to go there. Praise them when they get there and reward them for going there on command. Their safe place is NOT a punishment, but a command to be obeyed. Never EVER punish them in their safe place.

2. Use ONE word commands, Dogs do NOT understand whole phrases.

3. Do not punish them if you do not catch them doing something wrong. They do not have the memory to retain things. If you find an accident that you have no idea when it happened, neither do they and they will be confused if you punish them.

4. Labs can be very emotionally needy, they like attention and are eager to please. Give them ways to please you often. They have an instinct to retrieve so teaching them to fetch things is great.

5. Start very early teaching them not to jump up. Labs get large quickly and if they have a habit of jumping on people, its hard to break and they can inadvertantly hurt someone.

6. Love them.

Puppies are puppies. They all need love, attention, training (Including potty) and a lot of care to become a good dog.

There is a great book called "I just got a puppy, what do I do?". It covers all the basics and will get you started.
