Einstein was one of a number of physicists who were working out how Newton's Laws break down at high speeds. He was unusual in that he was not working with a university or with a laboratory. He was working as a mail clerk at the time. His breakthrough not only solved the newton's law problem but hinted at something even more extraordinary. He did this all by using math and did not have anything to back it up. His wife summed it up nicely. She once said, my husband does not not need a telescope, he has figured out the universe on the back of an envelope. While his work was originally rejected, it was later accepted and in his later years he was quite a celebrity. He hung out with the in-crowd in Bloomsbury.
